My HDMI port doesn't accept the commonly used HDMI cables. Someone mentioned that I should get a male to VGA female cable. I'm seeing different kinds of these online. Please help me understand this and which one in particular I should buy so that I can connect my laptop to my TV.

 

Note: My laptop is Folio 9480m.

The video port on your laptop is a DisplayPort 1.2a type, not an HDMI type.

Very few HDTV's have DispayPorts and  most that do have the DP1.4 version, not the 1.2a version. 

You will need a DisplayPort 1.2a to HDMI cable to connect your HDTV to the laptop. 

 

The picture is unlikely to be 4k

 

 

VGA is analog low resolution output. and there are not many  modern TVs that accept that format any more.
