This is the strangest thing, when I connect my external monitor to my HP laptop, I have to connect and reconnect the HDMI cable, a few times in order for the external monitor to display. When I get it connected, if the screen display timesout due to my settings (10 minutes, etc). When I wake the laptop up, I have to go thru the same steps as before to get the external monitor to connect and display. What is causing this, my BIOS are up to date?

Hi @Thom_SrJd,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It seems like you're experiencing issues with the connection between your HP laptop and the external monitor. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the problem.
- Update Graphics Drivers: Ensure that your graphics drivers are up to date. You can check for updates on the HP website or through the device manager on your laptop.
- Check HDMI Cable: Make sure that the HDMI cable you're using is in good condition. Try using a different cable to rule out the possibility of a faulty cable.
- Change Power Settings: Sometimes power settings can affect external monitor connections. Make sure that your laptop is not going into a deep sleep or hibernation mode when the display turns off. Adjust the power settings to see if it makes a difference.
- Windows Display Settings: Go to the display settings in Windows and make sure that the external monitor is recognized and configured correctly. You can try extending or duplicating the display to see if that resolves the issue.
- BIOS/UEFI Settings: Check if there are any relevant settings in the BIOS/UEFI that might be affecting the external display. Ensure that your BIOS is up to date, and if not, consider updating it.
- Graphics Control Panel: If your laptop has a dedicated graphics card (e.g., NVIDIA or AMD), check the control panel settings for the graphics card. Adjust the settings related to external displays.
- Disable Screen Timeout: As a temporary solution, you can try disabling the screen timeout or increasing the time before the screen turns off to see if this prevents the issue from occurring.
- Check for Windows Updates: Make sure that your Windows operating system is up to date. Sometimes, updates can include fixes for display-related issues.
- Test on Another Monitor: If possible, try connecting your laptop to a different external monitor. This can help determine if the issue is specific to your laptop or if it's related to the monitor.
By going through these steps, you should be able to identify and potentially resolve the issue with your external monitor connection.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
