My battery was not charging so I went to the HP support and entered information and was given a list of replacement parts. They are out of stock and my only resource was to get not genuine but compatible battery and adapter. However, when I plugged in the adapter and tried to charge battery it would only charge if lid was closed and then had an extreme short battery life. I was told to plug in adapter but there was never recognition that I had plugged the adapter in. I ran more tests and battery was fine but needed to be calibrated. However, the support could not detect adapter. How can I bypass the fact the HP only will detect its products when they no longer exist. I don't need the greatest and fasted computers just basic ones that will allow me to do email. surf web etc. I am really upset because I purchased HP because they used to never be like IBM or other companies forcing you to use genuine products. Also if I could find needed adapter and batteries it will cost more than buying a new laptop. Not everything needs to be tossed in the trash all the time, as a senior citizen I don't have the finances to buy the newest things every year. Amy way to reconfig laptop so it detects adapter and allows new battery to function properly

As a fellow senior citizen, struggling to get by on Social Security, I can readily understand your reluctance to spend major dollars on new equipment -- but in this case, you really have no other choice.
I will agree that Genuine parts tend to be very expensive, which is why I get my batteries from the local MicroCenter store. They offer a liberal full return/refund policy, so I am not out money if the parts don't work. That said, I've never bought a replacement battery from them that did not work.
You should check out their online website to see if they have what you need, and if it cheaper that what you have been told the Genuine charger will cost: https://www.microcenter.com/
Good Luck

For some reason everything is working, even with non HP original equipment. I took a tweezer to see if pins were bent in jack. Sometimes I have to first close lid insert adapter and then turn the adapter until red light comes on. But I am not spending money replacing the jack. Thanks for your help.
