I get that the unit comes with an emmc onboard; however, if it is not upgradeable, why does it have an M2 slot on board?

Hi @kingsolomon1953,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

The HP 14-cf1xxx series of laptops typically comes with eMMC storage, which is known for its efficiency and compactness. However, to offer flexibility to users who may require additional or faster storage options, some models in this series are equipped with an M.2 slot on the motherboard.

Purpose of the M.2 Slot

  1. Storage Expansion: The M.2 slot allows users to expand the storage capacity beyond the built-in eMMC. This is particularly useful if you need more space than what the onboard eMMC provides.

  2. Performance Enhancement: If the existing storage speed is a limitation for your workflows (like faster boot times or shorter loading times for applications and files), installing an NVMe or SATA M.2 SSD can significantly enhance performance.

  3. Versatility: Including an M.2 slot provides users with more choices for storage types, either continuing with eMMC for routine storage or upgrading to SSD for faster performance tasks.

Steps to Upgrade Using the M.2 Slot

  1. Check Compatibility: Before purchasing an M.2 SSD, ensure it is compatible with your specific HP 14-cf1xxx model. Confirm both the length of the M.2 slot and the type of connection it supports (SATA or NVMe).

  2. Installation: Open the laptop's bottom panel carefully to access the motherboard. Insert the M.2 SSD into the slot and secure it with the screw provided.

  3. OS Installation: If you plan to use the SSD as the primary storage, you may need to transfer your operating system from the eMMC to the SSD or perform a fresh OS installation.

The flexibility provided by an M.2 slot can extend the lifespan and the utility of an HP 14-cf1xxx series laptop by adapting to the evolving storage needs of users.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
