Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi All,

I have HP 15-ay196nr Laptop, 15.6" Touchscreen, Intel® Core™ i7, 8GB Memory, 1TB Hard Drive, Windows® 10 Home.

I have having performance issue with this laptop and  hence I am looking to do below upgrage against buying an new laptop

1) Upgrade RAM from current 8 GB to 16 GB

2) ADD SSD (128GB or more if possible) to coexist with current SATA 1TB (But make SSD as primary to boot from)

Can you please advise if both of above are possible and howtodo pointers please?

Thanks and Regards.

Hi,

1. Your PC will support up to 32GB of RAM (2x16GB)  DDR4 2400Mhz.

The RAM will run at 2133Mhz. There are two slots and at the moment you have one slot with 8GB and one empty slot. So you can add another 8GB in the empty slot. You can buy from your preferred brand such as Crucial, Samsung....

On page 56 of service manual you can see the steps to upgrade the RAM:

2. You can not add an M2 SSD as there is no extra slot. What you can do is replace the 2.5" mechanical drive with a 2,5" SSD such as the Samsung 860evo or similar. This will give a great boost to the PC.

On page 60 of service manual you can see the steps to replace the drive.

Hope it helps,

David

Hi David,

Thanks for your responce. I am clear on RAM upgrade now.

For SSD, do you mean replacing current SATA by SSD ?

I would like to keep SATA as that is 1 TB storage and just attach 128 or 256 GB SSD for performance boost.

Can I place SSD in DVD Drive slot so to have both SATA and SSD available?

(I am not sure if this will give same performace uplift as using SSD only config but current SATA 5400 RPM is causing a bottleneck)

Thanks and Regards.
