Greetings - I am trying to replace a failed hard 1TB drive on an HP 1wp51ua#aba / HP 15-bs033cl. Can someone please identify the part number or a compatible replacement? Unfortunately, I don't have any of the original product documentation and will have to buy the media recovery software to reinstall the OS.
I'm fairly confident I can expose the existing hard drive from videos available online, but I haven't cracked the case yet because I'd like to determine the hard drive replacement cost first.
Thank you and any input will be greatly appreciated!
Regards,
Mateo

Hi Mateo,
Here is a small guide
Basically, you can use any 2.5" SATA3 Hard Drive (max 2TB because of the thickness of drive). You could also replace with a 2.5" SATA3 SSD (of your desired capacity) which would give a great boost to the everyday performance of the notebook.
Examples:
https://www.amazon.com/Seagate-BarraCuda-Internal-Hard-Drive/dp/B07H28QRKN/ref=dp_ob_title_ce
On page 53 of the service manual, you can see the steps to install the drive
http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c05493257
To install Windows again:
Download media creation tool from Microsoft on PC (different PC), run and create a bootable pendrive with the OS on it. (there is an explanation on the Microsoft web page on how to create the pendrive). Create the drive with Windows 10 Home 64-bit edition. Windows will automatically activate once installed and connected to the Internet.
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10
If you choose this option you will need to use the pendrive to perform a clean install of Windows 10. You might need to disable fastboot and secure boot in BIOS (probably not). So, insert the pendrive in the PC and it should boot directly from the drive. If not, turn off the PC by holding the power button. Press the power button and immediately keep pressing ESC until the startup menu appears and then press F9 and choose the pendrive in the boot menu. Once it boots from pendrive follow the procedure to install Windows.
When finished installing allow Windows to completely update and find all or most drivers. You can follow this process by going into settings > Security and update > click on Verify for updates. You might need to reboot a couple of times.
I recommend installing HP support assistant which will help keep your drivers up to date and much more. You can download the latest version from here.
https://www8.hp.com/us/en/campaigns/hpsupportassistant/hpsupport.html
Once completely updated you can go into device manager and see if there are any missing drivers (there will be yellow exclamation mark next to the device). You can find these drivers and software on HP support page for your product.
Hope it helps,
David

I would not trust the links provided by @OandP-Engine
The method above is how to clean install Windows 10 directly from Microsoft

Thanks to all for the prompt replies and input.
David - your input was very complete, understood, and appreciated. One quick question - if I install Windows 10 on the new hard drive using the Microsoft method, won't I need a new Windows 10 license? I don't have the CD Key for the original OEM hard drive.
Or will Microsoft recognize the laptop's specs - CPU ID or serial number? - as a legitimate OS license?

Mateo

You're welcome Mateo.
You do not need a new license as it is in the firmware. Once installed and connected to internet Windows will automatically activate.
I would definitely opt for an SSD as the difference in performance is really great.
