HP Laptop 15-bs0xx(intel corei5 7th generation)

Hello,

I have an HP Laptop 15-bs0xx with these specs:

  • Processor: Intel Core i5-7200U
  • RAM: 4 GB DDR4 (1 of 2 slots used)
  • Storage: 500 GB WDC WD5000LPCX hard disk (HDD)
  • OS: Windows 10 Pro

The laptop is slow, especially when using VS Code and also other software. I plan to:

  1. Add a DDR4 SODIMM stick in the empty slot (4 GB or 8 GB).
  2. Replace the hard disk with a 2.5" SATA SSD (480 GB).

Please let me know:

  • Which RAM and SSD are compatible with my exact model?
  • What is the maximum RAM it supports?
  • Does it also have an M.2 slot?

Thank you for your help.

@fatima53,

The service manual (on page 2) indicates that models with Intel Core 7th gen processor support 16 GB (2x8 GB) DDR4-2133 memory.

HP 15 Laptop PC (Intel)HP 15g Laptop PCHP 15q Laptop PC Maintenance and Service Guide

DDR4-2133 is not easy to find nowadays. You can use DDR4-2400, 2666 or 3200 RAM, but it will downclock to 2133 speed.

If you want to add a 4GB or 8 GB memory in a second slot, you can do so. Or you can remove the current 4 GB module and install 2x8 GB RAM.

If you want to replace the HDD with a 2.5" SATA SSD, you can do so, but your model comes with an M.2 slot that supports an NVMe SSD, which installed on your model, will provide a great performance gain.

You can install an M.2 NVMe 2280 SSD of any capacity you want, 512 GB, 1TB or more.

After you install Windows on a new M.2 drive, you can use the HDD for data storage or eliminated it.

the service manual (on page 3) indicates that your model comes with an M.2 slot that only supports SATA SSDs, not NVMe interface.

Since M.2 SATA SSDs and 2.5" SATA SSDs use the same SATA storage controller drivers, both run at the almost same speeds.

You can replace the HDD with a 480 GB 2.5" SATA SSD you mentioned earlier, or you can install an M.2 SATA SSD like this.

The service manual shows the 2.5" drive replacement procedure on pages 53-54.
