My HP 15-da laptop doesn't charge while it is in use. However, as soon as I shutdown the laptop or put it to sleep it will charge successfully.
I found this post and followed the steps - but it didn't solve the problem:
To answer the questions posted there:
- Did this happen after a recent window or software update? - possibly not sure
- Have you made any hardware/software changes? - no (except for automatic updates)
- Did you try another charger? Yes, same issue with another charger. And when I use these chargers on my other HP laptop, they can charge while the other laptop is in use. In other words, the chargers work perfectly on the other laptop.
- Does the notebook shut down immediately (right after you unplug the charger)? No
- Do you get any error message on your notebook (Such as Plugged in, not charging, etc.)? No
I tried the following steps as recommended in the other post:
- Hard reset - issue persisted
- BIOS default - issue persisted
- Hardware test on battery and ac adapter - the battery passed but I got this error code for the AC adapter - HOWEVER please keep in mind, this same charger works perfectly fine on my other hp laptop:
GSPPK3-99AAt9-XD7W3F-C1BL03 (I couldn't find any information about this error). - Removing ACPI device in Windows - issue persisted but I noted the instructions mention removing the battery but the battery is internal & the laptop needs to be opened to remove it so I'm not sure if that is impacting the effectiveness of this step.
Please advise on what the error code indicates and/or other steps I can take to resolve this issue.

Depending on the configuration of your laptop, there may be several chargers of different wattages for that series. The bios is capable of sensing which one is in use, if it detects you are using an adapter that is too small, it will run the laptop but not charge the battery so that the adapter isn't overtaxed.
We don't know which laptop you have and what configuration without a full model number or product ID, also which cpu and if it has discrete graphics or not.
So the issue may be the charger may be too small for your particular model, or the bios thinks it is too small, but it may be correct. This is where the step of clearing cmos by removing the battery and pressing the power button for a bit is critical. That procedure wipes any bios settings saved or recognized and may clear the false reading of a correct charger.

Thanks for the reply. I just want to clarify something, since my battery is internal and not removable without opening the laptop. I should:
- Open the laptop & remove the battery
- Close laptop
- Start laptop (several times?)
- Open laptop, re-install battery, close up laptop again.
Am I interpreting that correctly?

Just unplug the battery is all you need to do. Then press and hold the power on button for say, 20 seconds. Plug the battery back in and see if the problem is cleared up.
We can get you the procedure to remove the bottom cover but a full model number or product ID is needed.
edit- I found your laptop's service guide- http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c06691790.pdf

Hi,
I'm back at this project. I tried the procedure outlined above. Once the battery was removed and I held the power button for about 5 seconds or so I noticed the light indicating it was plugged in would go off. I did this a few times. I then replaced the battery and restarted. I received a message about CMOS being invalid and to hit enter to restore default settings. I did. Unfortunately the laptop still won't charge while in use.
I checked the 2 HP laptop adapters I have (both of which work fine in my other HP laptop) and they are the same model #:
741727-001
So I don't think it's a matter of the adapters getting switched and the one I'm trying to use doesn't match the laptop with the issue.
Is there a way I can find the meaning of the error code?
This is the exact model #:
