HP Notebook - 15-dw0038wm
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I'd like to know if this notebook is backlit keyboard compatible, because I'd like to add one if it is.  If it is, then I'd like some info on how to open it up and how to replace the non-backlit one with the backlit one.

@W1DGL, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your HP 15-dw0038wm Keyboard Compatibility!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

The HP 15-dw0038wm notebook typically comes with a standard keyboard that may not support backlighting. Whether this model is compatible with a backlit keyboard would depend on the specific design and internal connections designed by HP. Unfortunately, detailed information about compatibility to upgrade to a backlit keyboard is not provided in the extracted content.

Opening and Replacing the Keyboard

If you have confirmed compatibility with a backlit keyboard through HP support or documentation, you can follow the general process to replace the keyboard. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to open up and replace the keyboard:

Preparation

  • Ensure the notebook is turned off and unplugged from any power source.
  • Remove all peripheral devices and disconnect the battery if possible.

Tools Needed

  • Precision screwdriver set.
  • Plastic opening tools or a spudger.

Removing the Keyboard

  • Access Screws:
    • Turn the laptop over and remove all screws securing the bottom cover.
    • Remove the optical drive (if applicable) to access additional screws.
  • Detach the Bottom Cover:
    • Use plastic opening tools to gently pry open the bottom cover.
    • Be cautious of ribbon cables attached to the cover; disconnect them carefully.
  • Access Internal Components:
    • Locate and disconnect the keyboard ribbon cable from the motherboard.
  • Remove the Keyboard:
    • Remove screws holding the keyboard in place (if any).
    • Carefully pry the keyboard out of its placement slots.

Hope this helps!

Take care, and have an amazing day!
