Hi, need assistance with determining if my laptop supports a PCIe Gen 4 M.2 SSD, or should I stick with a PCIe Gen 3 M.2 SSD? Thanks in advance!
The laptop came with a 512 GB Sk Hynix PCIe M.2 SSD. I would like to upgrade to a 2 TB SSD. I'm considering the following two replacements:
Crucial P5 Plus 2TB PCIe 4.0 3D NAND NVMe M.2 SSD, up to 6600MB/s - CT2000P5PSSD8
Crucial P3 2TB PCIe 3.0 3D NAND NVMe M.2 SSD, up to 3500MB/s - CT2000P3SSD8
Laptop details:
Model: HP 15-eg2073cl (part of the HP 15-eg2000 series, with Product id (System SKU) 644Y9UA)
OS: Windows 11 Home
Processor: Intel Core i7-1255U processor
Motherboard: HP 89F6

Hi @cloudforest,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to assist you.
I see that you are looking for information related to your laptop.
As I see here your laptop was built to work with PCie 3 gen M.2 SSD and upgrading to gen 4 might not work as the slots will only work with gen 3 ssd.
Suggest you to replace the ssd as it came with the laptop if you are planning to replace it.

What you stated about about fitment and compatibility of a PCIe Gen 4 M.2 SSD is not an accurate statement.
A PCIe Gen 4 M.2 SSD will fit the slot on the laptop's system board, it just will not run at Gen 4 specification speed.

@Erico & @Irwin6, thank you for responding!
I bought a Samsung 980 Pro 2 TB PCIe Gen 4 NVMe M.2 SSD, since it was on sale. I intend to replace the SK Hynix 512 GB SSD, which came with the laptop.
I haven't yet installed the Samsung 980 Pro though.

I successfully upgraded from a SK hynix BC711 PCIe Gen 3 512 GB SSD to a Samsung 980 Pro PCIe Gen 4 NVMe 2 TB speed. I ran CrystalDiskMark once using the "NVMe SSD" setting. I do not get Gen 4 speeds.

I stated that would be the case in one of my previous replies.
I would guess that you believe it now.
