So my laptop stopped working. I finally got to the system diagnostics. It told me to replace the battery and then showed an error code for the hard drive.

Does this mean that I need a new hard drive? Is the old one salvageable? If I can't fix the old one, can I still get my data off of it?

Hi:
The error code reported, Hard Disk 1 Quick Test Failure, does mean the hard drive needs to be replaced and the operating system reinstalled.
Below is the link to the service manual, where you can find the hard drive removal and replacement procedure.

After you replace the hard drive, you can reinstall W10 for free by making a bootable W10 USB installation flash drive using the Media creation tool at the link below. You will need access to another working Windows PC for this.
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10
After you get W10 installed, you can install the drivers and available software from your notebook's support page.

Data recovery from the failed hard drive...probably not possible, but you can try reading the drive buy purchasing a SATA to USB cable, plug one end into the drive, and the other end into a working PC's USB port and see if you can read/copy any data from the hard drive to the PC.
