Hi @JAYPM,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your new HP 15s FQ-5xxx laptop is making unusually loud fan noise even during light use, and it’s affecting your studies. Let’s go through detailed steps to troubleshoot and fix this.

1. Check Background Processes

Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.

Look under Processes for any apps using high CPU or disk resources (like Windows Update, Chrome tabs, or background apps).

End unnecessary tasks to reduce CPU load and fan activity.

2. Update BIOS and Drivers

Go to HP Support → Enter your laptop model → download the latest BIOS and chipset/graphics drivers.

Outdated drivers or BIOS can cause fans to run louder than normal.

After updating, restart the laptop and monitor fan noise.

3. Check Power Settings

Open Control Panel > Power Options or Settings > System > Power & Battery.

Set to Balanced or Recommended instead of High Performance, which increases fan speed unnecessarily.

In Windows 11, also check Battery > Battery Saver and make sure it isn’t forcing max performance when plugged in.

4. Clean Air Vents and Ensure Proper Ventilation

Even a new laptop can accumulate dust in a few months.

Make sure nothing is blocking the vents (avoid soft surfaces like beds or cushions).

Use compressed air to gently clean the fan vents.

5. Reduce Browser Load

Chrome and other browsers can use a lot of CPU even on simple tabs.

Limit open tabs, or switch to Edge or Firefox, which may use less resources.

6. Check for Malware or Unwanted Software

Run a full Windows Defender scan or a trusted malware scanner.

Some background malware can cause high CPU usage and fan noise.

7. Use HP CoolSense or Fan Management (if available)

Some HP laptops have HP CoolSense to manage fan speed and temperature.

Open HP Support Assistant → check for CoolSense settings and enable it to optimize cooling.

8. Monitor Temperatures

Use a free app like HWMonitor or Core Temp to check CPU/GPU temperatures.

Normal idle temps are usually 30–50°C.

If temps are above 70–80°C at idle, it indicates a thermal issue.

I hope this helps.
