HP 17 ca-0xxx
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Product was purchased as  a gift for me but it has only 4Gb of RAM and is way too slow to use even for normal MS Office applications.  I need to know what the maximum memory capacity is that I can insert (IN THE ONLY SLOT THE BOARD HAS) and what the max speed rating is for that RAM (and ideally a known working part number etc).  Please help before I die of excess spinning wheel syndrome!

Hi:

Below is the link to the product specs for your notebook.

Since your notebook has one memory slot, you would have to remove the 4 GB memory chip and replace it with an 8 GB memory chip.

Below is the link to the service manual where you can find the memory upgrade info (chapter 1), and the memory removal and replacement procedure (chapter 6).

This would be a compatible memory chip for your notebook...

That may help some but if you are still not happy with the results, you can replace the 2.5" mechanical hard drive with a 2.5" solid state drive, or add a M.2 SATA solid state drive, and use the 2.5" hard drive for storage.  The second option is a little more difficult to configure.

You can use the cloud recovery tool to reinstall W10, the drivers and the software that originally came with the notebook.

Here is an info link for how to use the cloud recovery tool...

You can see if your PC is supported by the tool at the link below...

I have a HP 255 G7 notebook with the AMD A4-9125 processor, a 256 M.2 SSD, 8 GB of memory in the single slot, and I can tell you the PC is barely adequate with that hardware.

I hope your notebook's A6 processor performs a whole lot better than the A4!

Thanks Paul.  So 8Mb is the max RAM level.  I had hoped that there might be a single 16Mb option.

Thank you for taking the time to answer my question, I'll bear in mind the drive options that you mentioned...or I'll lower my expectations accordingly!

You're very welcome.

Only the models with the Ryzen processors may support a 16 GB chip in both slots, although the service manual states the max is only 2 x 8 GB.

The A series processors can take a max of 8 GB per slot (notebooks with the A9's have two memory slots).
