I have an HP 17z-ca000 laptop, the mother board is an 84D0 SPS:L22720-601. there is a place on the motherboard for an M.2 NVMe to go but no socket for it. Can a socket be soldered onto the spot. They must have left it off of the build because of the system I chose when I bought the Laptop
Product Number: 3JQ28AV
Serial Number: [Personal Information Removed]
BIOS:F.54-04/15/2020
Thanks

Hi, @Jdfearl
According to the parts list for your notebook, it comes with an AMD A9 processor.
Below is the link to the service manual for your notebook.
Maintenance and Service Guide HP 17 Laptop PC
While the manual indicates that both SATA and NVMe SSD's are supported, I think only the notebooks that come with the AMD Ryzen processors support NVMe drives.
If you look at the service manual, you can add a M.2 slot.
There are additional parts you have to buy for this purpose which are found in chapter 3 on page 24.
(5) Solid-state drive board L24487-001
(6) Solid-state drive bracket L22535-001
The parts are not orderable from HP.
I do see the solid state drive board on eBay, but not the bracket.
You would also need to find the right size screws to secure the parts to the motherboard.
Since it is most likely that your notebook would only support a SATA M.2 drive if there was a M.2 slot, you would not derive any better performance with a M.2 SATA drive vice replacing the 2.5" mechanical hard drive with a 2.5" SSD.

Hi:
Your pictures seem to indicate to me that the socket is a M.2 slot.
This is what the slot part number looks like on eBay.
I have to say that I never saw one with the notch in that spot though, so I can't be 100% sure.
Notice this diagram for the notch location for a typical M.2 slot...

It also looks like it is sharing a SATA connector with the hard drive, doesn't it?
The only other thing it could be would be the socket for a DVD drive.
