Right,
I have attempted to contact HP Support via Chat and Telephone, but those fellows did not have the information I needed off-hand. Hopefully my good neighbors here are different!
I am running an HP 17z-ca100 with Linux. The machine is not currently my main computer as I'm still in the process of learning the operating system. After an update, the behavior of the normal F-keys and the Action Keys seemed strange to me. To use an Action Key, I simply push the associated F-key instead of the normal fn-key + F-key, if you get my meaning. Because I don't use the computer enough to tell the difference, I'm hoping someone here can tell me the NORMAL BEHAVIOR of the Function and Action Keys for an HP 17z computer of this type, running Windows as a benchmark. My understanding of this issue is that it's a question of firmware rather than hardware, so I'm not convinced the operating system has anything to do with it. I could be wrong about that, however.

Hello @Hornet-01,
Have you tried following the steps listed in this document to change the Action Keys mode? It's just the first set of steps "Enable or disable fn (function) or action keys mode."

Eddy,
That solved the problem perfectly! Thank you. If the OS gets updated and reverts back to the action keys being in the "enabled" mode, it looks like I will have a bug to report. Again, thanks!
...Might be a good idea for HP's live support personnel training program to give their guys a few more lessons on the BIOS.
