I know this has been asked before,

https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Hardware-and-Upgrade-Questions/Which-kind-of-SSD-does-my-HP-2...

but I cannot ask more questions under the same thread for clarifications, and I was instructed to create another one so here goes.

I want to upgrade my HDD to a/n SSD to make booting up faster but I'm relatively new to tweaking my laptop so I need a lot of help before making a purchase.

Here's what I researched, bold lines are what I need clarification on.

(1)  From the previous thread, I learned that there is an M.2 slot for SSD on "Internal Card" on a HP 240 G6 laptop product specifications,

(2) and that a SATA III type (the gum-shaped exposed ones?) can be used. However, the one who answered did indicate that they used a HP 250 G6 service manual. Will it be the same?

HP 240 G6 service manual only indicates the presence of M.2 slot unlike HP 250's, which indicates M.2 SATA 3 slot support,  hence my confusion. The 250 manual seems more condensed and has a lot more information too. Is the screen size really the only difference between the two i.e. I can use the HP 250 G6 manual like it was for HP 240 G6?

(3) My processor is i3-7020u which isn't present from the three original kinds (i5-7200u, i3-6006u and N3060) from the manual. Does this change anything?

(4) I searched the shops and found SSD 2.5 variants (the covered ones), as well as SSD M.2 SATA 3, and M.2 PCIe. From what I understand, at the very least, I can replace my HDD into SSD 2.5 which uses up my hard drive slot (Can this be clarified?)

That's it actually. At the end of the day, I only want to upgrade my slow af HDD into a faster SSD. The tl;dr question is if I can really use the m.2 slot for a  M.2 SATA 3 SSD on a HP 240 with an intel i3-7020u processor.

Help is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Hi:

Looking at the service manual for the 240 G6 and reading about the M.2 slot availability, leads me to believe that since your notebook only came with a 2.5" drive that there may not be a M.2 slot at all.

HP 240 G6 Notebook PC Maintenance and Service Guide

From chapter 6, page 43...

Three different SKUs related to storage are offered
● Hard drive only
● M.2 solid-state drive only
● Hard drive and M.2 solid-state drive

System boards are offered with an additional M.2 solid-state drive connector for hard drive and solid-state drive models.

So, you will have to open up your notebook and confirm that your notebook has a M.2 slot for a SATA M.2 SSD, because there is a good chance one is not there.

Since a M.2 SATA and a 2.5" SATA SSD have the exact same performance for the same brand you buy, you can replace the existing 2.5" mechanical hard drive with a 2.5" SATA SSD.

That would be the easiest thing to do and eliminates all doubt.
