HP 245 G7 Notebook PC (9EC03AV)
Ubuntu LTS

I am planning to ad an SSD and DDR4 module to my  HP 245 G7 Notebook PC
The device originally came with 8GB DDR and 1TB HDD.

I know the device has an ssd slot and an empty DDR4 slot. I has a few questions on the compatible devices for upgrade.

What is the max memory that can be used with this laptop? is it 8+8? or can I do 8+16 or 16+16 (From dmidecode it looks like 16+16 should be possible)

If a slot can support 16GB what is the recommended Memory product?

I am currently planning to add

  1. WD Blue SN570 of either 500GB or 1TB capacity.
  2. 8GB:
    Hynix 8GB PC4-21300 DDR4-2666MHz 260-Pin SODIMM 1.2V Single Rank Memory Module HMA81GS6CJR8N-VK  OR
    Kingston KVR26S19S8/8
    Valueram - DDR4-8 GB - SO-DIMM 260-Pin - 2666 MHz/PC4-21300 - CL19-1.2 V - Unbuffered - Non-ECC  OR
  3. 16GB: Sk Hynix HMA82GS6CJR8N-VK  If 8+16 is a supported memory configuration, Or go for two of this card for a 16+16 configuration

The Jobs I normally run on this machine regularly result in consumption of 10+GB of Memory(DDR+Swap).

Recommendation on right configuration is welcome.

Amazon link for the products listed above are:
16GB skHynix

8GB Kingston, 8GB Hynix

WD Blue SSD

From dmidecode I can see my current memory is

Use: System Memory
Maximum Capacity: 32 GB
Number Of Devices: 2

Handle 0x0010, DMI type 17, 40 bytes
Memory Device
Data Width: 64 bits

You're very welcome.

I think HP did that because a # of the 245 G7's come with the AMD 'A' Series processors and the M.2 slot in those models only support SATA SSD's.

I don't know why they didn't differentiate but they didn't.

If you look at the 245 G8 service manual, they do indicate that the models with the Ryzen processors like yours support NVMe SSD's.

Maintenance and Service Guide (hp.com)

There should be no problem installing a 16 GB memory chip along with what you have now.

The memory will still run in the same single channel mode though.

Dual channel mode requires the memory to have matching capacities in each slot (2 x 8 GB, 2 x 16 GB).

Hi:

If your notebook has an AMD Ryzen processor, the M.2 slot will support a NVMe SSD.

It should also support 2 x 16 GB of DDR4-2400 memory but if DDR4-2666 or 3200 memory is less expensive that would be fine too.

Here is a YouTube video where someone has installed a NVMe SSD in a 245 G7 (Ryzen).

UPGRADE TO NVME SSD | HP 245 G7 AMD RYZEN 3 3300U | WD BLUE NVME 500 GB - YouTube

The notebooks with the AMD 'A' series processors only support SATA M.2 SSD's.

Thanks,
The laptop has "AMD Ryzen 5 3500U with Radeon Vega Mobile Gfx" I will go ahead and order the WD Blue...
I was concerned because the service manual only stated the SATA ssd as a replacement part.

Will mixing 8GB and 16GB create any problem?

I ordered the memory from Amazon and a wrong part was delivered. I got hma81gu6afr8n instead of HMA82GS6CJR8N-VK
the GU indicates UDIMM instead of SODIMM (GS) Is this compatible? Or will the socket only accept a SODIMM module?

Hi:

If this is the part you ordered, it should work.

HMA82GS6CJR8N-VK Hynix 16GB SoDimm PC21300 Memory (memory4less.com)

A UDIMM memory chip normally refers to the much bigger size memory chips used in desktops such as this:
