Hi, I've got a HP 625 laptop with V160 processor and BIOS 68VDA Ver F.09

I've tried installing a Turion II P540 which, according to the service manual, is one of the compatible processors for this laptop but it doesn't boot to POST and the fan doesn't come on. So it would appear that the BIOS doesn't recognise the new processor, even though it's supposed to be compatible. Replacing it with the original V160 allows the laptop to boot and run as normal, so nothing was damaged during the install.

Apart from a bad processor, any ideas? — Thanks.

Hi, I had another look at the new processor, and it's marked Turion II Ultra. That didn't seem right so I looked up the S/N on it: TMM600DBO23GQ  That makes it a Turion II Ultra M600  which is not what I ordered, and certainly won't work with this laptop.

Sorry to have wasted your time Erico, I should have checked this first. I was just so sure it was the right one because on the receipt it says Turion II P540. I'll have to send it back.

I just loooked through the Service & Maintenence guide. The AMD Turion™ II Dual-Core P520 2.30-GHz is listed but not the Turion II P540  which you stated that you installed. Unless you made a typo it appears that you installed an incompatible processor (no BIOS support).

Kind regards,

Hi, thanks for your quick reply Erico. When I first checked for a service manual, I did the same as you and downloaded that one because it's the only one listed as "maintenance and service guide".

But, since it didn't include the V160 which I have, I took a look at the one above it, dated 4th April 2011. Even though it's title doesn't include "maintenance and service guide", it's actually an updated version, and it does include my V160.  That's where I got the processor list from. It's on P28.

OK.

I suggest that the first thing to do is install the UEFI System Diagnostics if it is not already installed. You can check by powering your notebook and pressing F2. If the notebook responds by invoking a diagnostics menu, then UEFI is already  installed. UEFI gives you a way of backing out of a bad BIOS flash so never delete UEFI.

Update the BIOS to the latest version. Your BIOS may be an old version that does not have support for the CPU you want to install.

Best regards,

erico

Hello again, and thanks for the suggestion. Yes the BIOS is certainly something to check. On this model, I've got the latest one (68DVA Ver F.09) and there isn't a more recent one that is listed.

I did wonder if maybe I should try resetting the CMOS memory by taking out the battery, or resetting to factory default, before swapping processors again.

Clearing CMOS before upgrading a processor is a good idea.

OK, I'm back home from work, so I've got my laptop in front of me.

Yes, F2 brings up the diagnostic menu.

If it helps at all, the product number is YQ307EC#ABF

Don't have time today to try again, I'll try again tomorrow after clearing the CMOS, as you mention that would be a good idea. If that doesn't work, I think I'll have to conclude I've got a bad processor.

No worries. Not a waste of time. I am just glad you took a closer look and did something to get it sorted. Being a determined individual goes a long way when dealing with PC hardware and upgrades.

erico

Yes, hopefully the replacement processor will be fine.
