I've noticed a fairly large number of questions on this forum asking a version of the following question

Can my HP Chromebook [insert model] with USB-c connect external monitor with [HDMI or Displayport] .

The community mods are doing an admirable job answering this question, especially since HP's documentation clearly answers this question for (i think every) Chromebook(s). And mostly the answer is "Yes"

Sadly, so far as I can tell, that's as far as most users will get, because what the documentation doesn't say and most people asking do not seem to know, is that the next sentence is:

'But only if you're prepared to enable dev mode and  in so doing break your warranty, play around with some kernel settings that could really mess your hardware, and become an expert in vmc - termina. And you're also a 5 year Linux veteran, right?'

I'm mostly putting this post here, in the hope that others won't incur the expense or waste of time that I have, figuring out that answer for myself.

I'm also feeling a bit miffed by HP since (and I'm not sure this applies in every country, but it does in most), including a socket that exists but is non functional, and known to be non functional, in the primary operating system without disclaimer, would seem to be a violation of basic product and sales description.

Maybe if sufficient other people, equally miffed, but keen to give HP a chance to address the issues, were to post in reply, we might get some help. So far I have got no reply.

I wish you all the best, and maybe Google will finally get around to fixing something as basic as external monitor support sometime soon.

I think your next question might be answered by HP Display Pro 220.

Serial or Display port connection, both cables and port functional or other devices.
