I have exactly same problem. I took the keyboard from my PC and plugged in to the USB to use the chrome book, so dumb, HP better come with a good solution.

As an update to my prior post, no, the onetab add-on helping must have been a coincidence or only corrected part of the issue. Maybe a software issue causes the initial problem and then wailing on the keys to compensate causes physical damage?

Either way, as there has been no support to speak of for this know problem -- recall? -- I did what everyone with this issue will likely have to do: I purchased another machine. Of course, I opted for another brand and will be unlikely to buy HP devices in the future because of this experience. Sad, given that I use google docs/drive/gmail and the entire google ecosystem for all of my productivity. Luckily, decent full-scale laptops are cheap enough these days.

If a representative of HP would like to contact me to win back my loyalty and/or keep me from recounting this ridiculously poor buyer experience to other consumers in the future, feel free. You obviously have my e-mail address given the number of pointless requests to mark my issue as "resolved" I get from this forum.

One tab and power wash doesnt help at all. This is very frustrating, I called HP customer support had to hangup after being on the line for 40 minutes 😞

Hi 🙂

Ok, so I got an hp chromebook (14) about a month ago and everything has been Great until some of my keys started to not respond (U/Y/H etc).  I scoured the internet for days to find a solution (including this message board).  Somewhere out there I caught a glimpse of a little blip of information that stuck out to me.  Someone mentioned something about thinking that the problem didn't originate with the keyboard nor the motherboard.  The problem seemed to stem from an Extension!  Their solutions were to reset/powerwash the computer.  Something about that struck me a certain way and I was at my wits end and really didn't want to send it back to the manufacturer as other than the key issue, I'm in Love with the chromebook.

So, before I committed to the drastic measure of powerwashing my CB, I decided to go to my 'manage extensions' area (just right click on any of the extensions in the upper right hand corner of the browser...click on the bottom link titled 'manage extensions').

I went through and got rid of random extensions that I had recently added prior to having my issue.  Extensions such as 'yummly', a couple of sling box player extensions that were suppose to help me view dish anywhere on my CB but never worked properly (part of me suspects that it was those faulty extensions that caused my issue), there were other random extensions that I got rid (not too many) that I can't remember.  I decided to stick to the 'name brand' extensions and get rid of less familiar ones.  OH, I was trying to use 'free' streaming tv extensions as well, and I got rid of those too!  Which could have been the problem, I don't know.

After that, I haven't had the problem and that's been about 2 weeks ago!  I was so ecstatic that that was all that was causing the problem 🙂  I noticed there are a TON of message boards with people at their wits end with this issue.  So, I decided to visit as many as I can, to let people know 🙂

I hope if you're still having the problem, that this helps.

Hi there.  I'm an experienced computer tech and have repaired all types of laptops, desktops, and smartphones.

I had this same problem with my HP Chromebook 14 although it was a different set of keys which had stopped working.  After digging around online I saw that this was a very common issue with many people.  Way to go HP!

I tried a Powerwash as per HP's instructions and it did absolutely nothing to fix the problem.   That's because it's a hardware issue.

However, there's hope!  The problem for me lay in the keyboard ribbon cable.  Remove the screws in the back (I used this video as a tear-down guide:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-a0r_nNAqlw) and carefully pop off the keyboard.  There are two ribbon cables: a skinny one for the mouse-pad and a wide one for the keyboard.  There is a sharp crease where the keyboard cable is normally folded onto itself and therein lies the problem.

Once I streched the cable out without disconnecting it and powered the computer back on the keys resumed working.  So I believe that sharp fold in the cable is causing the problem.  These cables are normally designed to take folding but perhaps HP used some shotty cables?  If you buy another factory keyboard as a replacement or send it back to HP to fix it I'd put my money on this happening all over again if they use the same type of cable on the replacement.

What I did upon reassembly was sandwich a piece of cardboard between the ribbin cable right at the fold and tape it down.  My theory being that the thickness of the cardboard would reduce the severity of the crease in the cable.  If that makes any sense.  So far it is working fine now although time will tell...

There should be a recall on this.  HP should cover the cost of repair or replacement regardless of warrenty.  Judging by the number of similar complants this is a serious and widespread problem that should have been caught before they shipped the product.

Same thing here.

Our model is the HP chromebook 14-x-030nr Ocean Turquoise or something.

It was a gift for my 10 year old daughter from her grandmother.  Ironically, I read up on common issues with the chromebook before the problem, saw this thread, and crossed my fingers: "Hope that doesn't happen to my little girl's chromebook!".  Sure enough, it started a couple days ago, less then 3 weeks old!

I am checking to see if grandma has the receipt still - sadly, the HP warranty reteival system says the manufacturer warranty expired a week before christmas, probably same day it was purchased (about a month ago).  To me, this makes it seem like HP has set up an automated system that denies the existence of a warranty until the customer is able to prove otherwise (i.e. with purchase receipt).

I am having this problem too.  Except I've lost the 6 7 y u h j n m (so basically a line down the middle right).  So SUPER frustrating!  Sometimes I can get them to work by a restart of the browser & computer, but it's getting worse.  I've owned it for almost a year - and it was reconditioned, so only  a 90 day warranty.  This has been going on for months, but to start with it was much more intermittent.

I just tried this and it worked for me too

This has happened twice over the course of a year on a  HP 14" touch screen chromebook.  The left shift key doesn't shift to caps and the h,u,n and other keys don't respond.  After doing the reset and powerwash, no change.

Both times I took the keyboard off and disconneted the battery for a couple of minutes  (takes about 10 minutes and the instructions are all over the internet)

Both times it worked like a champ and the keyboard is back to normal.  Much easier than screwing around with various setup changes and far more effective.
