I hooked my HP Chromebook up to my monitor and then went for a short walk. Before I left, the screen was up and on the sign-in. When I got back, I noticed the screen was black and the Chromebook wouldn't turn on. I plugged it in and it's not blinking or showing any signs of life. I held down the power button but nothing happens. It has not been dropped or received any beatings in it's short life.

Hi @MStone46
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like your HP Chromebook isn't turning on or responding to anything. Let's go through some troubleshooting steps that may help you get it working again:
1. Check the Power Source
- Verify Charging: Ensure that your Chromebook is properly plugged into a working power outlet, and check if the charging cable is securely connected to both the Chromebook and the power source.
- Charging Indicator: If your Chromebook has an indicator light for charging, check if it's showing any color (usually amber/orange for charging and white/green for fully charged). If the light isn't on, the issue could be with the charger, charging cable, or the charging port itself.
- Try a Different Charger: If you have access to another Chromebook charger with the same specifications, try using it to eliminate the possibility of a faulty charger.
2. Perform a Hard Reset
A hard reset can sometimes resolve issues when the Chromebook is unresponsive.
- Hard Reset Steps:
- Unplug the Chromebook from the power source.
- Press and hold the Refresh key (the circular arrow key) and then press the Power button.
- Hold both keys for about 10 seconds, then release.
- After a few seconds, try turning the Chromebook back on by pressing the Power button.
3. Check the Display
It's possible that the Chromebook is on but the screen is not displaying anything. To rule this out:
- External Monitor: You already tried hooking it up to an external monitor. Ensure that the monitor is set to the correct input (HDMI or whatever connection you’re using).
- Try the Power Button: Press the power button again to see if there is any sound or sign that the Chromebook is powering up. Sometimes the screen may remain black due to a display issue, but the Chromebook may still be running in the background.
4. Force a Restart with the Reset Hole
Many Chromebooks have a small reset hole that can be used to force a reboot. If your Chromebook has this feature:
- Find the Reset Hole: Look for a small pinhole (usually located on the side or bottom of the Chromebook).
- Use a Paperclip: Gently insert a straightened paperclip into the hole and press for 10-15 seconds.
- Power On: After this, try pressing the power button to turn it on.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
