Looking for a weekend project and noticed that parts are cheap.
Curious if i can swapped the motherboard in my old HP DV5 2134us (part number 598225-001) and install a new CPU (AMD Phenom 2 P960). In the service manual it looks possible, keeping the same thermal load (25W).
However, not sure what verison of the bios i would need. Please Advise.

Here is the Manual which will be good to have for your project.
Top listed and therefor guaranteed compatible processor is the AMD Phenom II N970, but your P960 is also listed. As far as BIOS, since these processors are listed in the Manual they are supported at any BIOS level, even the original factory BIOS. However, a competent technician would always flash the BIOS to the latest version before doing a CPU upgrade just as a best practice. Latest is F.27:

CPU upgrade should be a drop-in, using the same cooling system. There is only one motherboard SKU for the model series for AMD processors so any AMD processor listed in the Manual will work. Good luck.
