Hi,

I have a DV6-1350us laptop with T6600 core2duo processor & 4 GB RAM. I want to upgrade my laptop CPU to core i3 or i5. Can anyone suggest which is the compatible CPU?

Do I need to change any other components for CPU upgrade?

Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Stutheme

You can upgrade but it is not going to be to an i3 or i5. The motherboard is from the hardware generation before Intel Core (i3/i5) processors. Only motherboards from that model series can be fitted into your laptop so there is no way to put in a motherboard which is socketed for anything newer. Your motherboard is the lower end one with only Intel graphics and will accept any processor listed in the Service Manual so the only reason to upgrade it would be to get dedicated video which would of course also be dated. And your processor choice would still be limited.

Here's the Service Manual:

Top processor is a Core 2 Duo T9900 which is a great CPU and will run rings around many i3 and i5s and is a huge improvement over a T6600.

Heart break of sorts for no i3 support, but Thanks a lot for providing detail. I'll go through manual and see if it's worth upgrading T9900.

What's your experience? Can T9900 provide experience similar to i3?

Do I need to change anything else than processor? I hope motherboard can be kept same.

The T9900 will perform about like an i3-2310m and the whole point is it is the fastest cpu that will fit the socket on your motherboard. No other upgrade needed. The cooler will work, memory will work. Always a good idea to upgrade the BIOS before a processor upgrade but not absolutely necessary.

Thanks, let's see.

Another issue i'm facing is the excessive heating and continuous fan running.

Someone suggested me to apply fresh thermal paste on heat sink. Will it be the right solution?

Yes that is the obvious first thing to try and you will have to do that if you replace the CPU. Just be sure you know how to apply it.

The highest memory you can get in this laptop is 8 GB. I upgraded mine to 8 GB memory and Intel Core 2 Duo T9900 processor. I noticed a huge difference when I did this. In regards to the overheating and fan constantly running, upgrading processor, RAM, re-applying thermal paste, and changing to a Solid State Disk hard drive will make a big difference in the noise coming from your laptop, the amount the fan runs, and will definitely prevent the laptop from overheating. The first thing I would recommend doing is replacing your processor if you want to, and apply thermal paste. This will also increase speed when running programs. Thermal paste is used to prevent the processor from overheating, so when you apply a fresh coat, this will make it so the fan won't have to run very often, unless you are running a program that requires a lot for it to run properly.
