HP Pavilion dv7t-3100 CTO Ente
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

I am upgrading my HP Pavilion dv7t-3100 CTO Entertainment Notebook PC (product VG420AV) with the maximum 8GB of RAM and a new SSD. Unfortunately the CPU is only an Intel i3 M330 @ 2.13 Ghz, obviously very slow. The Maintenance and Service Guide (Doc Part No. 575975-001) does not list the i3 or i5 processors, but it does list the Intel Core i7-820QM 1.73-GHz, 8-MB L2 cache and 1333-Mhz FSB. It also lists the i7-720QM. Both are Quad Core processors. The chipset is listed only as "Intel 5 Series Express" and I am unable to find any match to this phrase on Intel or other CPU web sites.

That said, my question is can I go to a CPU that is any higher then the i7-8200QM listed above? I found a listing for the Intel Core i7-940XM Mobile Extreme Edition - BY80607002526AE, which fits the same Socket G1 / Socket rPGA988A.

Thank you for your help.

Hi,

Please check a list on page 1 of the third manual on the following link:

        https://support.hp.com/us-en/product/hp-pavilion-dv7-3100-entertainment-notebook-pc-series/4074368/m...

Page 48 shows you part number and how to replace CPU.

Regards.

Thank you, Provost, for your assistance. I too found that information on the service manual but am mystified as to why all CPU's that will work in my laptop model aren't listed. Obviously my PC has an i3 at the moment, and only two i7s are noted in the service manual. I've found HP support to be excellent and other service manuals I've reviewed for HP products list all CPU's that the system will accept.

I've also tried to determine potential CPU's accepted by searching for the motherboard's specifications (part no. 580972-001). No luck on HP.com or the web.

As I noted, the chipset identification is vague, also preventing CPU determination through Intel or other sites.

If anyone has information beyond the service manal, I'd appreciate the feedback.

I've been looking for more information on this system and came up empty as well. I did find two service manuals, one dated March 2009 (Document number 515798-001) and the other is dated September 2009 (Document number 575975-001) . The earlier manual lists a range of CPUs but none of the listings use the i3, i5, or i7 designations. The September manual appears to be the one used in this discussion.

I installed an Inel Core i7 820QM 1.73 GHz CPU in my DV7t-3100 CTO and while it runs much faster, it seems to lock up after being used a while. I'm thinking it is overheating. There is only one CPU cooling system listed for this PC so I don't understand why that would be happening. Like you I added an SSD and maxed out the RAM.

My quandry is should I remove the 820QM and put back the i3 that came with the PC, or should I try using an Intel Core™2 Quad Q9100 2.26-GHz with 12-MB L2 cache and 1066-MHz FSB 507947-001, which the fastest CPU listed in the March 2009 manual?

Thanks!
