Hi,
- Product Name: HP ENVY 15-j050tx Notebook PC
- Model No: F2C67PA
Purchased: November 2013
Factory default OS preinstalled: Windows 8 (64 bit), later upgraded to Windows 8.1 (64 bit)
Current Operating System: Windows 10 (64-bit)
- BIOS version: F.69
- Processor Type: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4702MQ CPU @ 2.20GHz
- Total Memory (RAM): 16GB
- Video Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M (2 GB DDR3 dedicated)
I was having certain problems and my laptop occasionally ran into BSOD while running Windows 8.1 (64-bit) so I clean installed Windows 10 Home (64-bit) version: 1803 from the official Microsoft website.
After installing Windows 10 Home (64-bit) version: 1803 from the official Microsoft website, I noticed all the drivers got updated automatically through Windows update and I did not need to manually install any drivers for my HP laptop.
To double check, I also installed HP Support Assistant software and checked for updates but did not find any new drivers for my laptop. I manually checked for drivers for my laptop in HP drivers page but HP does not have any suitable drivers for my laptop running Windows 10 Home (64-bit). The latest version is for Windows 8.1 (64-bit). The link is given below:
https://support.hp.com/in-en/drivers/selfservice/HP-ENVY-15-Notebook-PC-series/5354982/model/5448977
I also understand that HP did not develop Windows 10 drivers for HP laptops made before August 2013.
From the official HP drivers download page for my laptop model running Windows 8.1 (64-bit), I noticed there are 4 Drivers for Chipset and 2 Drivers for Storage. A screenshot from the website describing the 4 Drivers for Chipset and 2 Drivers for Storage is shown below for your reference.
I noticed on my Device Manager, under "Memory technology devices" there is "Realtek PCIE CardReader" installed.
I noticed on my Device Manager, under "System devices" there are 2 drivers, "Intel(R) Management Engine Interface" and "Intel(R) Smart Connect Technology Device" installed.
I would like to cross-check whether all the remaining 3 drivers from Driver-Chipset and Driver-Storage are already installed and updated on my laptop. How do I find the remaining 3 drivers in Device Manager whether they are installed?
The three drivers are:
Driver-Chipset
- Intel Chipset Installation Utility and Driver
- Intel Rapid Start Technology Driver
Driver-Storage
- Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver
A screenshot showing my Device Manager is shown for your reference.
Please show me step by step to locate the 3 remaining drivers which I had mentioned above in my Device Manager. I would like to verify whether they are already installed, if not I'll have to install manually.
Thank you.

Hi:
If you want to install the latest chipset installation utility, you can get it directly from Intel at the link below.
Then 2nd file down on the left side of the page is the auto install file.
You also can install the latest RST driver for your notebook's chipset at the link below....
Chipset will be hard to track down.
You will find most of those devices listed under the System Devices category in the device manager.
For example the Sm Bus Controller will be one of the devices listed under that category that is supported by the Intel chipset installation utility.
Check the driver version it has now and then check it again after you install the above chipset driver.
The RST driver version can be found by clicking on the Intel Chipset SATA RAID controller in your screenshot.

Hi Paul_Tikkanen,
Thank you for your post. Please see the three things listed below.
1. To locate whether Intel Chipset Installation Utility and Driver is installed on my laptop, from your guidance, I searched in Device Manager under System devices category but could not find Sm Bus Controller. Anyway, for your reference, I have attached a screenshot of my System devices category expanded to show you what are all there. Please see whether you can find any clue of Intel Chipset Installation Utility and Driver installed.
2. Does RST mean Intel Rapid Storage Technolgy? If so, I've found Intel Chipset SATA RAID Controller under Storage controllers category and found the driver version as 15.44.0.1010. It is one of the latest driver versions which is supported by my laptop, so I think I can keep this.
3. Finally what about Intel Rapid Start Technology Driver? Where is it located in the Device Manager? How do I know whether it is installed on my laptop?
Thank you.

You're very welcome.
Interesting that there is no Sm Bus controller driver listed.
You will have to click on every device to find out which ones were installed by the Intel chipset installation utility.
I have different listing of devices under my system devices section such as the chipset family and USB 2 controllers
Yes, RST = Rapid Storage Technology.
Rapid Start is not a driver, it is the software that is installed if you run the executable file on that Intel RST link I posted.

Following your guidance, regarding Intel Chipset Installation Utility, I clicked on each and every device under System Devices category to find if I can find anything which was installed by Intel Chipset Installation Utility. Manufacturer: Intel has provided a Legacy device. Is this related to Intel Chipset Installation Utility? Moreover the Device status is listed as No drivers are installed for this device. A screenshot is shown below for your reference.
I also found out there are 2 USB controllers installed by Intel, will they be Intel Chipset Installation Utility? A screenshot is shown below for your reference.
If they are all relevant to Intel Chipset Installation Utility, does it mean Intel Chipset Installation Utility is already installed on my laptop?

Hi:
I don't know what the legacy device is, but whatever it is it is working properly or there would be a ! mark next to it.
The first of the two other devices was installed by the chipset driver (Intel 8 Series...).
The USB 3.0 controller driver is native to W10.

@Paul_Tikkanen,
Can you let me know what do you mean by, "The first of the two other devices was installed by the chipset driver (Intel 8 Series...)"?
Do you mean to say in my USB controllers category, Generic USB Hub and Intel(R) 8 Series/C220 Series USB EHCI #1 - 8C26 were installed by Intel Chipset Installation Utility?
09-22-2018 03:47 PM
Hi:
Just the Intel(R) 8 Series/C220 Series USB EHCI #1 - 8C26 should have been installed by the Intel Chipset installation utility.
If you click on the USB generic hub device, that should have a native Windows driver from 2006.

Hi Paul_Tikkanen,
If Intel(R) 8 Series/C220 Series USB EHCI #1 - 8C26 is installed by Intel Chipset Installation Utility, I assume that the Intel Chipset Installation Utility and Driver is already installed on my laptop. Isn't it?
Regarding Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver, I've found Intel Chipset SATA RAID Controller under Storage controllers category and found the driver version as 15.44.0.1010. It is one of the latest driver versions which is supported by my laptop, so I think I can keep this.
But I have a doubt, from the link you've posted regarding RST drivers: https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/26760/Intel-Rapid-Storage-Technology-Intel-RST-User-Interf...
I opened the given link which gives me all the versions of RST drivers listed on the bottom left corner of the Intel website and found there is no same driver version as I'm having. My driver version is 15.44.0.1010 and I do not see any matching version serials of 15.44..... Why is the case? A screenshot of my driver version from my Device Manager is also shown for your reference.
