I continuously got hardware failure alert from Windows, the harware gots disconnected and reconnected every 5 to 10 seconds, the alarm sound is quite annoying and i can't bear it anymore.

The source is something connected to  Port_#0016.Hub_#0001 of the usb controller, it should be an internal connection to something on the mother board.

Would somebody kindly identify what harware it is for me?

Hi @Kube_Xia,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The alert you're receiving is indicating that something connected to Port_#0016.Hub_#0001 of the USB controller is malfunctioning. This issue could be caused by a variety of internal components, but it's most likely related to the following.

  • Internal USB Ports: Sometimes, ports on the motherboard are used for internal components such as the built-in keyboard, touchpad, or wireless card (Wi-Fi/Bluetooth module). A connection issue in any of these internal devices could trigger the error.
  • USB Hub Issue: Port_#0016.Hub_#0001 likely refers to a specific hub within your system's USB architecture. If the hub is malfunctioning, it could be causing the device disconnections you’re experiencing.
  • External Devices: If there is any USB device connected internally (such as an internal storage drive or another peripheral), this could also be the cause.

Steps to identify and fix the issue:

  • Device Manager: Open the Device Manager (you can press Win + X and select "Device Manager") and look under the "Universal Serial Bus controllers" section. Find the USB Root Hub or the specific USB hub (such as Port_#0016.Hub_#0001) and check for any errors. You may see a yellow triangle icon indicating an issue.
  • Update or Rollback Drivers: Right-click the USB controller and select "Update driver" to ensure your drivers are up to date. If the issue started after a recent update, you might try rolling back the driver.
  • Check for Overloaded or Malfunctioning Ports: Try disconnecting any external USB devices (flash drives, printers, etc.) to see if the issue resolves. If the error stops, one of the connected devices could be causing the issue.
  • Hardware Check: If possible, try to isolate the malfunctioning internal component by checking for a malfunctioning device, like the touchpad or internal wireless card. You could also run hardware diagnostics (such as HP's built-in diagnostics) to identify any hardware issues.
  • BIOS/UEFI Settings: Sometimes, the issue can be related to BIOS/UEFI settings. You could check your BIOS for any USB-related settings that might need adjusting (e.g., disabling "Legacy USB" or similar options).

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

I fully understand that Port_#0016.Hub_#0001 is an internal usb port and the harware connected to this port is malfunctioning. What I want to know is what hardware it is.

Hi @Kube_Xia,

Thank you for your response,

To identify the specific hardware connected to Port_#0016.Hub_#0001 on your HP ENVY - 15-as108tu, follow these steps.

Use Device Manager:

Open Device Manager:

  • Press Win + X and select Device Manager.

Expand "Universal Serial Bus controllers":

  • Look for the USB controllers and devices listed.

Find the Device:

  • Right-click on each USB device and choose Properties.
  • Go to the Details tab and select Location Path or Bus Relations from the dropdown menu. This may reveal which device is associated with Port_#0016.Hub_#0001.

Check the Device Hardware IDs:

  1. In the same Properties window, go to the Details tab.
  2. Select Hardware IDs from the dropdown menu.
  3. Note down the IDs and search them online or in the HP service manual to identify the device.

Use USBDeview:

  1. Download and run USBDeview (a third-party tool for inspecting USB devices).
  2. Locate the entry for Port_#0016.Hub_#0001.
  3. Check the device name, description, and status.

Reference HP Documentation:

Consult the service manual for your laptop to identify internal USB connections. Typically, internal USB ports are used for components like:

  • Built-in webcams.
  • Fingerprint readers.
  • Bluetooth modules.
  • Internal card readers.

Disconnect/Disable Non-Essential Devices:

To pinpoint the issue:

  1. Physically disconnect external USB devices.
  2. Temporarily disable suspected internal devices (like the webcam or fingerprint reader) in Device Manager.
  3. Check if the malfunctioning device matches Port_#0016.Hub_#0001.

Examine System Logs:

  1. Open Event Viewer (Press Win + R, type eventvwr, and press Enter).
  2. Navigate to Windows Logs > System.
  3. Look for USB-related warnings or errors that might reference the problematic port.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
