Hello Everyone,
I have an HP ENVY 17-j184nr Notebook PC (ENERGY STAR), and I'm interested in possibly adding a bluetooth chip for bluetooth capability. Currently, the laptop doesn't have such functionality, but I know that hardware manufacturers often leave slots, just in case the user wants to expand certain features. I don't know if my laptop has such capability for bluetooth.
Does this model of laptop have such capability? What kind of slot does it use if it does have a slot for it?

Hi, @PhysicistSarah
You can exchange the wifi adapter in there now for one with bluetooth.
On a model such as yours with an Intel 4th gen core processor, here are the two model wifi cards that I know will work...
If you have or plan to get an AC router...
Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 7260 802.11 ac 2x2 WiFi + BT 4.0 HP Part #710661-001
If you only have a dual band wireless N router and don't plan on replacing it anytime soon...
Intel Dual Band Wireless-N 7260AN 802.11 a/b/g/n 2x2 WiFi + BT4.0 HP Part # 717381-001
Either card is readily available on Amazon or eBay.
Do your search by the HP part number, not the model of the wifi card.
According to this link, there is Linux support for either of these adapters...
The wifi adapter removal and replacement procedures can be found in chapter 5 of the service manual.

Your machine ONLY has Realtek RTL8188EE 802.11bg/n 1x1 WiFi adapter without Bluetooth. Option

There are many brands and models around, cheaper too.

Sounds great, thanks!
Is the range similar to the previous one? I kind of noticed that it had a hard time going through concrete in my school, while my brother's computer with its wi-fi card could get the signal rather easily.

You're very welcome.
Either of those cards were one of the best on the market at the time your notebook was made.
I have the 7260 N card in my HP 350 G1 and it works great on W10, and has great reception.
Just make sure that there are two antennas present in your notebook now.
The card models I posted must have two antennas connected to them in order to work.
It is easy enough to check.
