Well the other day I had a webpage up on my screen. I turn around and look back at my screen and the laptop looks liek it powered down. I tried everything and eventually took it to a shop as it seemed to be either the motherboard or the CPU since there were no lights except where the battery charge light is and the adaptor connects. So the shop tells me that my assuptions seems right, it turns out my motherboard is shot. Is this a known issue with these laptops? My laptop is a little over a year old, but out of warrenty. Does anyone know the model of motherboard for this laptop and how much it costs:
HP ENVY TS 17 Notebook PC
E8A11UA#ABA
Rev 1965-110
I have owned many laptops in the past and they got their share of use and beatings. I cannot believe this over 1,000$ laptop motherboard died a little over a year...
thanks in advance,
Jim

From the Service Manual this is your Motherboard:
Equipped with the MB HM87 Express chipset, a graphics subsystem with UMA memory, and the Windows 8.1 Standard operating system 746450-501
It is not inexpensive:
There is not much I can say to make it any easier except electronics are unpredictable. Sorry for the premature failure.

I have another question, when i look at the service manual it shows the board 746450-501 has Leap motion, my laptop did not have this.
So I have two questions, is 746450-501 the correct motherboard even though it did not have Leap motion?
My second question is, can I go with one of the better motherboards with the NVidia graphics built in like these two:
Equipped with the Intel HM87 Express chipset, the Nvidia N14P-GT (GeForce 750M) graphics subsystem with 2-GB of discrete memory, and the Windows 8 Professional operating system 720267-601
Equipped with the Intel HM87 Express chipset, the Nvidia N14P-GT (GeForce 750M) graphics subsystem with 2-GB of discrete memory, and the Windows 8 Standard operating system 720267-501
also what is the difference of the GB of discrete memory?
Also a few mother questions, What are the difference of the boards:
720265-601
720265-501
746451-501
746451-601
what is this Discrete memory and UMA memory, can I just use any of these boards and why not if I cannot?
Thanks in advance.

Another part of this question, could I go with this board and buy the heatsink for the video chip and be good? :
736481-601
I figure if I buy the Heat sink (includes replacement thermal material):720233-001 to replace 720231-001 would I be able to do this, at lest get better graphics if I am going to just replace the board?

Yes any motherboard in the Service Manual will fit in the laptop. There is a possibility that some of the ports will not be 100% the same. There might be HDMI on one and not another, for example. There is a chance you would have to modify the chassis a little (dremel tool) or just leave something covered. Try to get an image of the board so you can compare to yours.

As for the newer board with the switchable graphics, do I need to change the heatsink? I notice it is a different part number for the NVidia Switchable graphics, and everywhere I look the part is like 80$. Any ideas?

Already taken it apart and put it back together so that won't be an issue, as I replaced the screen a year ago, I just don't want to waste my money buying the new motherboard and heatsink to find it won't work...
If I upgrade I think I will have to replace the heatsink, least it looks that way from the service manual as I have the 720231-001 in there now with the UMA chip...
Just want to make 100% sure this is possible... Here is the info from the manual about the heat sink:
(14) Heat sink (includes replacement thermal material): For use only on computer models equipped with the Intel HM87 Express Chipset and an Nvidia N14P-GT (GeForce 750M) graphics subsystem 720233-001
For use only on computer models equipped with the Intel HM87 Express Chipset and an Nvidia N14P-GV2 (GeForce 740M) graphics subsystem 720232-001
For use only on computer models equipped with the Intel HM87 Express Chipset and a graphics subsystem with UMA memory 720231-001

I decided to call HP and the woman I got using the Part Surfer phone number who could barely speak english told me that the heatsink is basically the same. That all three are basically the same heatsink, can anyone really confirm this, the last thing I want is to burn up a new board and I would be surprised that the UMA heatsink for the graphics chip is the same as the NVidia 750M. You would think it would be a different heatsink, I know the item numbers are different, but she tells me from what she knows they are basically the same and I would not need to buy the other item number , 720233-001, that the UMA one 720231-001 is the same thing. Can anyone confirm or deny this, or point me to pictures of the two?
