HP ENVY x360 Laptop - 13-ay0045au
Microsoft Windows 11

I have an HP ENVY x360 Laptop - 13-ay0045au which was purchased on 07-01-2021 and is currently out of its 1st year of warranty. Last night while closing the laptop I heard some creaking noises and saw that the right hinge was out of place and putting pressure on the screen. The screen is OK but now I am scared to open the laptop as it's bending the right side out while trying to open it, I don't want to crack the screen.

After looking for answers regarding the issue found that this is a "COMMON ISSUE" in this lineup of laptops?! This is my third HP laptop I have the utmost respect for the brand that's why I got this laptop but seeing that for so many years people have been having this issue about the hinges and still, they haven't changed it shatters my expectations.

I wanted to get a clear answer before heading to a nearby service center about whether they will or will not charge me to get this fixed. I currently can't open/close my laptop due to the fear of breaking the screen which will not be by any means will be fixed by HP as mentioned in so many forum posts and online.

Hopefully, someone gets in touch soon or just be left hanging until the issue becomes worse.

Hi @Sagar0011,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd like to help!

I understand that you are facing issues with the hinges. Kindly share the images of the hinges. I hope there are no physical damages.

I would need a few details on the product, I've sent you a private message. In order to access your private messages, click the private message icon on the upper right corner of your HP Support Community profile, next to your profile Name or simply click on this link.

I went to the service center today near me but sadly there is a crack in the glass in front now, they said if only I had an active warranty it would have cost me less or something. But my warranty expired this January and I didn't get any emails regarding extending it. How much do we have to be updated to look for exact dates and warranty options, the store people ask every customer to get the extended warranty but for online purchases, it is just mentioned somewhere. Also, my warranty expired this year why can't I have the option to extend it still? The service people said that even after I get it fixed I only get a manufacturer warranty for the screen for only 1 month 'Is this a JOKE?' what if the hinges get loose next year and break the screen again are we just gonna keep doing this like we are some kind of billionaires?

But on another point, the damage was done by a manufacturing defect (the problem with the hinges) yet I have to pay for its damage, not only will I have to pay to fix the hinge but it has damaged the screen which costs so much (almost 30% of the total cost of the laptop).

All of this has done nothing but diminish the respect I had for this brand. I know that these big companies can't care about every single customer but this "Hinge" issue has been a recurring issue for so many years yet we have to fight so hard just to correct a defect that the company just ignores to fix.

Maybe I was the stupid one to not see all the major defects that the product I am purchasing can cause in near future. I am from a common family it was my hard-earned savings that I used to purchase this product because it was an important part of my work but was a foolish to put so much money into a product that can break so easily?

I use it as a desk laptop open/close it 3-4 times max every day, and open it like normal people slowly and delicately no one in their right mind abuses such high-end products. The service people asked me if I open it harshly or keep it in uneven places, the hinge literally didn't open, and was putting pressure on the screen I didn't have the time to react. It eventually broke the glass in the front but the touch and display are fine. Do we have to get the whole display thing because it's a part of the screen? WHY? it's so frustrating to put all this in words. I wanted to get it repaired from the genuine HP service center but from the looks of it, I will just have to keep using this broken thing because I am not paying for anything that doesn't have a warranty even coming from the supplier himself.

Just looking at some posts here from last month only there are so many people complaining about broken hinges yet the HP hasn't given any statement about fixing it or changing it in the future.

Moral of the story - However good the product is if it does not change its defects even after they are known it's just a waste of a product and a scam for any people who invest in it.
