I have an HP EliteBook 1040 G4 and it is acting funny.
1. It cannot charge the battery (internal)
2. When I disconnect the battery and connect charger, it shows it is receiving power and I can work on it using the charger as the power source.
3. To charge the battery, I first disconnect the charger, then disconnect the battery and then reconnect the charger, it starts charging. But in this state it cannot power up when I press the power button. It only powers up when I disconnect the charger, and it starts working on battery power, until is is depleted. Then I repeat the process.
Any ideas to solve this, I have tried to reset the battery using the power long press.

Try resetting the EC (embedded controller chip).
That resets the laptop hardware.
Unplug the laptop after shutting it down and press and hold the power button for fifteen seconds.
Have you tested the battery to see if is still in good working condition?
Use the battery test that is in the HP Hardware Diagnostics UEFI utility.
Press the power button and then tap the F2 key once.
Choose component tests and then battery test.
Let us know what the result of the test was.

I suggest checking at your laptop's software and driver download web document to see if there is a newer BIOS available.
If there is, update the BIOS.
