Hiya, I have just got assigned an HP 820 G3 laptop. I have at home a Dell wk15 docking station that my partner uses for her laptop. The docking station charges uses type C, which I understand my 820 does not support. I noticed that my 820 has a USB3.0 charging port. Is it a port that I could use to charge my laptop (i.e. if I use a type C to USB adaptor I'll be able to use the Dell docking station with my HP), or is it just for charging phones/tablets using my laptop (ie it won't charge the laptop at all).

If it does not charge, is there any other way I could make use of the Dell docking station at all?

Many thanks

Sorry typo in my original post - the docking station is a Dell wd15

The most recent information we were given by HP employees is that if a notebook was delivered with a power adapter that plugs into a USB type-c port  then it is meant to be charged that way. Otherwise it is not.

If it was delivered with a standard power adapter that plugs into a connector port on the notebook,  then the ports are as you stated  "just for charging phones/tablets".

Many thanks. I'll probably just get it a docking station...

You will still need to connect a power adapter to the notebook in order to charge or power it.

An HP Universal USB-C dock or an HP USB-C Travel Port replicator does have support for your Elitebook 820 G3 notebook.

Many thanks Erico.

The travel port replicator I understand is just a extension device. The laptop still needs its own power, and the travel port connects to the laptop to offer additional ports such as VGA, Ethernet, etc. In other words, the travel port itself does not provide power.

Not quite sure I understand the universal USB-C dock. It looks very similar to the Dell one I have. If my laptop works with this dock (without having to have an additional power adapter), then it should also work with my Dell? There is a HP 4.5mm and USB Dock Adapter for this dock. Looks like the adapter enables charging the laptop from the dock via a USB-A port. So if I get this adapter, I should be able to also use my Dell dock with my HP 820?

Many thanks

That is correct

Unfortunately, there is no advice I can give you on that other than to say that  I would tend to stick with HP products that are reported and published as being compatible with your notebook.  I do not know the output characteristics of the Dell dock unit. Using the Dell dock it will be your own decision and the risk is yours as well.
