Elitebook 830 G8
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi all,

I'm trying to get the accelerator shell running with my brand new Elitebook 830 G8. At first, it wasn't working at all - not even charging at all. Latest FW update couldn't be installed, too.

I managed to fix this by installing the latest firmware for Omen accelerator with another tool. After this, the accelerator is detected most od the time and can even charge to notebook - it's a shame that I still get the popup to use an HP charger 🙂

But the main issue is that the eGPU is totally instable. Some times, it works for quite a while but most of the time I get a BSOD (WHEA) within 5 minutes. I found out that many users have problems with the accelerator and Gen10 / 11 CPUSs. The elitebook is even using TB4.

So far, all drivers / NB Bios are up to date. The GPU is a RTX2080TI. At first, I thought that the GPU is causing the issue - but it has been RMAed and  tested by MSI.

So, has anyone got the accelerator running with TB4 notebooks and / or Gen10/11 CPUSs, yet? I'm going to pickup a Razer Core X later today in order to rule out any problems with the GPU / nVida drivers. But I would definately miss the external SSD / USB ports.

It's really a bad  that HP decided to stop the support for the accelerator completely.

So,

I'm giving up on the Omen Accelerator! I'm about to call it a piece of sh#t.

I can cleary adivce to not buy it.

I tried everything I could get hold on:

  • Using the orignal 50cm TB cable
  • Updating to latest FW by using a Lenovo tool
  • Disabling LSM power management
  • Settings GPU to max power in NV control center
  • Disabling VT incl. DMA protection

I do know that the RTX20 series is not easy to handle as EGU - but the Elitebook hat problems to detect the Omen Accelerator at all - sometimes  not even managing to charge or to open up the SSD.

So it seems that HP must update the FW of the accelerator in order to be compatible with their later latest notebooks - but following the feedback of many users they don't seem to have any interesst at all.

Well, it seems that the Elitebook support is still very good - they could help on other issues very fast - but the support for Omen series seems to be a mess - more like sell and forget.

Final verdict:

Don't use the Omen Accelerator!!!

Changed to Razer Core X - it's stable AND faster! 3D Mark gives  +8% just by changing the eGPU-Case without touching any additional setting.

Would still like to see an official comment from HP on this. Why don't you care about forward compatibilty? Others can!
