HP EliteBook 840 G5
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi,

I recently got an HP EliteBook 840 G5 Laptop. I am trying to order a triple display docking station that is compatible with my new laptop. I need help with what docking station is compatible with my laptop and can operate 3 displays.

3 screens in addition to the main laptop screen? This is how it is described in the Service Manual:

Graphics
Support HD decode, DX12, HDMI 1.4b, HDCP 2.2 via HDMI/DisplayPort up to 4K @60 Hz
Both UMA and discrete
configurations
support three independent displays through docking stations as follows:
●  HP Docking Station - maximum resolution = 2.5K @60Hz (DisplayPort 1) and 2.5K @60Hz (DisplayPort 2)
●  HP Thunderbolt 3 Dock - maximum resolution = 4K @60Hz (DP1) and 4K @60Hz (DisplayPort 2)
● HP Thunderbolt Dock 120W or 230W G2 - maximum resolution = 4K @60Hz (DisplayPort 1) and 4K @60Hz
(DisplayPort 2) with Thunderbolt

So the HP Thunderbolt 3 Dock or G2 Tbolt dock will drive a pair of 4k screens through displayport and then the third display is the laptop display.

If you use both the DP ports on this you will not get additional video output from the VGA port or from the USB-C alt-dp or thunderbolt port but you can use these for other peripherals. You can connect a third external display through the HDMI port on the laptop but that is an additional connection you have to make every time you dock it.

I am using the HP Thunderbolt dock with the Elitebook 840 G5. I am using 3 screens via the two DPI and one USB-C interface.

Notably I can't get the laptop screen to work while I have the 3 screens working. If I connect the laptop screen, I lose one of my other screens.

My colleague has a Dell Dock and it has two DPI interfaces and one HDMI. This gives the 3 screens PLUS the laptop screen actually works as well. i.e. 4 Screens in Extended Display mode.
