I'm interested to know if it is possible to upgrade the graphics card in my HP Elitebook 8470W. I know that it came with an AMD FirePro m2000 graphics card and I know that they make several higer end models of that graphics card. Is it possible to purchase a higher end version of that graphics card and install it in my computer.

No unlike some of the mobile workstation models yours is switchable discrete video meaning the video is soldered to the motherboard. There is no higher or better motherboard available. Sorry.
See page 120 of the Service Manual here:

Well, the 8740W I just got bought has an ATI Firepro m7820. Looking at the card, it's plugged into a slot...
Pretty sure the card is NOT original...
Also, there's videos on youtube showing people changing out the video cards on the 8740w model... like this one:

Then the Manual is not accurate because it is not showing anything about a video card as a part or intructions on how to remove it. If yours has an MXM slot the procedure is rather self-expanatory. What is not explained is how the Manual is wrong. The Manual is clearly for your model and you can check my work by also looking at it. Maybe I missed where the video card is shown or discussed. What type of video card would you like to install? MXM cards are not standard like desktop video cards. Not all of them will work in every MXM application.
I think I see the issue here. Your title said 8470W and now you are talking about an 8740W. Two different laptops. 14 inch screen vs. 17 inch screen.
