HP Elitebook 8540w
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

Hi Community, Hi HP crew,

I currently run my HP Elitebook 8540w with a 8 GB Kit of RAM with Corsair ValueSelect (CMSO4GX3M1A1333C9).

It works perfect.

Now I tried to upgrade to a total of 16GB with a Corsair ValueSelect 16GB Kit.

My Elitebook has a Intel Core i7 Dual Core CPU.

The new RAM modules from Corsair are CMSO16GX3M2A1333C9.

After mounting them, BIOS shows the correct total size of about 16 GB but Windows 7 won't start. It hangs on the "Starting Windows" screen without Windows logo animation.

My Elitebook has the latest BIOS version F.0F ((afaik).

Is this new RAM Kit incompatible and if so, could you please advise which RAM to buy?

Thank you very much!

Best Regards

Most definitely. 32 gigs is not possible on the 1st gen Intel Core platform with 2 slots. 16 gig SO-DIMM modules were not yet a thing when that was a new laptop. Not sure how this can be misunderstood:

Maximum: Upgradeable to 8192MB with 4096MB SODIMMs in slots 1 and 2

The 1st gen Intel Core machines are very finicky about memory. Also the technical specs of the 8540W machine say that 8 gigs is the maximum memory. With Quad Cores they will run 16 gigs if the stars all align properly but on the dual core systems 8 gigs really is the maximum memory. If you are determined to try 16 gigs then shy away from ValueSelect and focus in on standard OEM memory and it has to be low density dual rank. Something like Hynix or Samsung. This Timetec brand is made by Hynix:

I did A LOT of research if this Elitebook is really capable of a maximum of 8GB or 16GB.

The manual says 8GB for Dual Core, but not if in total, or per module.

Even some HP Experts state in threads, that this number is about per module and not total maximum.

So I thought that 16GB of total RAM is possible for Dual Core and 32GB for Quad Core.

Am I definitely wrong with this?
