I upgraded from an I5 processor dual core to the 4 core i7 2820qm.  Note:  The 4 cores also give you 8 threads.  

 

The only thing you need to make sure is that you get the upgraded heat sync for the processor.  Since you already have an i7, you may already have it installed, but I'd check just to be safe.  I think the upgraded heat sync has 4 heat ports on it instead of 2 to carry the heat away.  You can find this on the installation manual for the correct part.  

 

Once I upgraded the heat sync I had no problems at all running the quad-core I7 processor.
