Hi folks,

Can anyone please help me get a service manual for my HP Elitebook 8760W ?

The Support pages only have drivers and software tools for download for my machine but no manuals. I need to buy a couple of items and want to use the correct HP part numbers without having to dismantle the laptop simply to look for the part number on the item. At present it's still working fine so I'd like to keep it that way by not taking it to bits unnecessarily 🙂

Thank you.

George

You're very welcome, George.

I recommend you start a new post because I may not be able to help you with any specific part number questions you may have.

I will look at any other questions you may have, and if I can be of any additional assistance, I will.

If not, there are other forum members that have more experience with the actual hardware replacements than I have.

You have a great day too!

Paul

Brilliant, thanks Paul, greatly appreciated.

Have a great rest of the day.

PS I haven't closed the post as solved because I may have a subsiduary question based on the part numbers when I've found them. Is this ok or should I close it as solved and open a new post with the subsiduary question?

Hi Paul,

In an earlier part of this thread (for a service manual to establish an HP Part Nmber for GPU cooling fan) )you suggested I post my question about overheating GPU separately. I've done that but received absolutely zero response in almost a month so turning to you again in case you do have any further suggestions or pointers where I can turn to next.

The separate post was:

Hi Folks,

When watching videos for the past few months my EliteBook 8760w shuts down on overheating graphics after about 10 minutes or so. SpeedFan shows GPU and T5 temperatures to be the culprits but doesn't allow for fan speed control on the 8760w, just monitoring of the temperatures.

On a previous post for this it was suggested that the gas may have escaped from the copper tubing on the heatsink and that I should consider replacing it. I'm happy to do that if it's really that but it's an expensive item so is there a way to test the one installed before I go to the trouble of buying a new one? The part number is 652544-001.

My 8760w has the NVIDIA Quadro 4000M graphics and the previous post also suggested installing the latest NVIDIA driver and control panel which I've done. The driver is now the latest but hasn't affected the overheating and shutdowns. Is there something in the NVIDIA control panel which allows configuration/setup of the fan speeds? I can't see anything obvious in the settings/tabs.

Incidentally, the fan has been thoroughly cleaned and all vents are pristine and clear so it isn't simply a case of air flow restrictions.

Sorry for turning to you with this but didn't know where else to go.

Cheers.

George

Hi, George:

Sorry that no one else was able to help you with the problem.

Perhaps @Huffer may have some suggestions for you to try, because I sure don't.

Cheers,

Paul

If its overheating like that I would focus in on the heatsink. And also check how the video card performs with benchmarks. MXM video cards have a tendency to have bad video memory and that can make them run hot. Unfortunately I know of no way to test the heatsink other than to examine it carefully for cracks in the copper tubing espescially at the joints.

Hi Huffer,

Thank you so much for such a quick reply, and of course for picking up the thread itself.

As suggested I ran UserBenchmark on my laptop but don't really understand what they mean if I'm honest.

UserBenchmarks: Game 18%, Desk 43%, Work 32%
CPU: Intel Core i7-2820QM - 55.8%
GPU: Nvidia Quadro 4000M - 11%
HDD: Seagate Momentus 2.5" 750GB (2010) - 52%
HDD: Generic SA16G SD Card 16GB - 4.9%
RAM: Unknown 4x8GB - 46.7%
MBD: HP EliteBook 8760w

The details of the graphics card test, although low at 11%, is actually above the average for this card and is "fine for general computing tasks and video play" (but poor for 3d gaming). That's not a problem for me because I don't do gaming, just would be glad to be able to watch a movie again without laptop switching off after a few minutes. Do you understand these benchmark scores or should I run a different benchmark? The memory tests passed with flying colours.

Also, is there a way of controling the GPU fan speed in any settings? The fan does alter speed according to load but just wondering if there are any additional tweaks that can make it run faster?

Thanks again and have a great afternoon.

George
