HP EliteBook 830 13 inch G11 Notebook PC (8M2X9AV)

Hi,

I've wasted hours with HP's support, there final solution was to format my laptop, which I'm reluctant to do.

So I'm hoping someone here might be able to help.

I have an HP Elitebook 830 G11, which has 2x Thunderbolt 4 ports (support up to 40 Gbps), support for USB4 and full DisplayPort 1.4.

I also have an HP Universal USB-C Multiport Hub, which includes 1x RJ-45 (10/100/1000 Mbps) port.

I have 100W power to the hub and the hub connected to the laptop.

When I do an internet speed test I'm getting around 320mbps, when my desktop next to me, connected to the same network, with the same cable gets 800+mbps.

If I connect in the same way to my old HUAWEI Matebook 13 AMD Ryzen, which only has:

USB-C x 2 (The left port supporting data transfer and charging, the right port supporting data transfer.

The HUAWEI MateBook 13 is equipped with two USB-C ports that support 3.1 Gen1 protocol, and have a theoretical transmission speed of 5 Gbps. Actual transmission speed may vary depending on the third-party USB-C device used.)

I get full 800+mbps speed!!

For information, I've tried a 4K and 2560x1600 USB-C portable monitor connected via 1 USB-C to the laptop and neither work, yet a 1080p one does. So I'm already thinking there is something funky going on with thunderbolt ports, sometime of power/bandwidth limitation.

Note: all testing done with just ethernet and power connected to the hub, no other devices.

Anyway back to my internet speed issue, from spending hours with HP support:

  • Updating BIOS
  • Updating drivers
  • Trying to install different hub software/firmware
  • Running the HP Image Assistant
  • Changing USB hub power settings in device manager
  • Changing network device power, speed/duplex, suspend etc. settings in device manager
  • Ensuring Thunderbolt enabled in BIOS
  • Using UEFI diagnostics to test USB, Network etc. all passing
  • Trying both USB-C ports
  • (Couldn't find Thunderbolt security or Pre-boot ACL options in BIOS)
  • Tried a different (non HP) hub same problem

There is nothing detailed in Device Manager as "Thunderbolt" just USB4(TM) Host Router (Microsoft). This looks either because it's Windows 11 or doesn't show till an actual Thunderbolt (not just USB-C) device is connected.

I still believe HP have something disabled/limited, either to get Evo certification or battery life (still **bleep**e) or to encourage buying a more expensive hub.

Using ChatGPT I was pointed towards a free application called HWiNFO 64. Upon running this under:

Bus > PCI Bus > Intel Meteor Lake/Arrow Lake-U/H PCH - Standalone USB xHCI Controller > USB Root Hub > [Port1] : Realtek Semiconductor 4-Port USB 3 Hub > [Port1] : Realtek Semiconductor Realtek USB GBE Family Controller, it detailed:

  • USB Version Supported: 3.00
  • USB Device Speed: USB 2.0 High-speed

So for some reason it is limiting it.

ChatGPT said it was because I'm using a generic Microsoft USB4 driver and I need the Intel Thunderbolt Controller Driver and Intel Chipset driver. On HP I can't find a Thunderbolt controller or even on the Intel website.

Any help or suggestions with this would be greatly appreciated.
