I recently bought one of these on eBay and I managed to get Windows 10 installed and when it’s not connected to the internet it’s stable, albeit with a bit crappy graphics, but when I connect it to the internet and Windows updates the graphics drivers the system crashes and I then need to reinstall Windows (I tried using Restore Points but even these failed after a while). The system also crashes if I update the graphics drivers via AMD‘s website (using their Adreniline app thing) and also if I use the driver downloaded from the HP site.

I was intending using it as a retro gaming emulation system so it’s set up on the tv and I’ve tried changing the HDMI cable, but to no avail. The PC only has DisplayPort outputs so I’m using a DP-HDMI adapter.

I’m guessing many other people must’ve had the same problem so any help would be appreciated if you’ve experienced the same. Could the DP-HDMI adapter be the issue?

Doesn't sound good to me.

When the onboard graphics exhibits issues like that, it probably is a hardware issue with the GPU chip having overheated and can't take the driver anymore, since you have tried everything possible to get the graphics to work.

I don't know what 705 G4 form factor you bought (SFF/MT), but you could easily get around the problem by installing a supported PCIe x 16 graphics card on eBay, and you could buy one that has an HDMI out port.
