Hello community,

I'm having serious difficulties with my HP Envy 15-bq101nl (Product Number: 2ZJ78EA#ABZ, BIOS version: F.22).

Situation:

  • The laptop originally had an NVMe SSD (now failed)

  • I installed a 2.5" SATA SSD using the existing connector on the motherboard

  • I obtained and connected the appropriate SATA cable

Problem:
During Windows 10/11 (64-bit) installation from USB, at the partition selection screen I get the error: "No drives were found. Click 'Load driver' to provide a mass storage driver."

What I've already tried unsuccessfully:

  1. USB created with: Official Media Creation Tool and Rufus 4.5 (GPT/UEFI mode)

  2. BIOS F.22: Checked all options - no setting to change SATA mode (RAID/AHCI/IDE)

  3. HP Drivers: Downloaded "AMD Chipset Driver" from HP website, but they're only .exe files that don't work during installation

  4. HP Cloud Recovery Tool: Doesn't find the Product ID, likely because I changed the drive

  5. External drivers: Tried AMD RAID Driver 9.3.0.00106 and various AMD SATA drivers - none recognized

  6. Diskpart: The disk appears in list disk but shows 0GB space

  7. Hardware test: The SATA drive works perfectly on other PCs

Technical information:

  • Product Number: 2ZJ78EA#ABZ

  • BIOS: F.22 (I press F10 but don't see SATA options)

  • Processor: AMD Ryzen 5

Specific requests:

  1. F6/Preinstallation drivers for AMD SATA/RAID controller for this specific model

  2. Compatibility confirmation for 2.5" SATA drive on this model (connector exists on motherboard)

  3. BIOS update that unlocks storage options or fixes the issue

  4. Alternative solution for HP Cloud Recovery Tool without recognized Product ID

Urgent questions:

  1. Is there a specific .inf driver for Windows installation on this model?

  2. Does the SATA cable have a specific part number for 2ZJ78EA#ABZ?

  3. Is there a newer BIOS version than F.22 that resolves storage compatibility issues?

Thank you very much for your help. I'm completely stuck and the laptop has been unusable for days.

Hi @Audioman70,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

It seems that your HP Envy 15 is unable to detect the newly installed 2.5" SATA SSD, likely due to a missing or incorrect SATA driver during the Windows installation process. Here are some steps to help resolve this issue:

Step 1: Verify BIOS Settings

  1. Access BIOS: Restart your laptop and repeatedly press F10 to enter the BIOS setup utility.

  2. Verify SATA Configuration: Ensure that the SATA Operation mode is set to AHCI. You can find this under advanced settings, often in a section labeled "Storage" or "Drives."

  3. Save and Exit: Save the changes and exit the BIOS, then attempt the installation again.

Step 2: Prepare Your USB Installation Media

  1. Driver Download: Visit the Official HP® Support and search for your product model 2ZJ78EA#ABZ. Download the latest Intel Rapid Storage Technology drivers or any SATA drivers applicable to your motherboard.

  2. Add Drivers to USB: Copy the downloaded SATA driver files to a secondary USB drive or to a folder on your current installation USB.

  3. Reconnect USB: Make sure the installation USB is connected before rebooting the laptop.

Step 3: Load Drivers During Windows Installation

  1. Start Windows Installation: Boot from your Windows installation USB.

  2. Load Driver Prompt: When you reach the partition selection screen and see the error message, click "Load driver."

  3. Browse for Drivers: Navigate to the location of the stored SATA drivers on your secondary USB or installation USB and select them. This should help Windows recognize the 2.5" SATA SSD.

    I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!

Hello,   @Jerry_57

Thank you for your response. Unfortunately, I must point out that the proposed solutions are not applicable to my specific case for the following reasons:

1. AMD ARCHITECTURE, NOT INTEL:

My HP Envy 15-bq101nl (Product Number: 2ZJ78EA#ABZ) has an AMD Ryzen 5 processor, therefore:

· The Intel Rapid Storage Technology drivers you suggested are not compatible

· The chipset is AMD, not Intel

· I need specific AMD drivers

2. BIOS SETTINGS:

You suggested checking/changing the SATA mode in the BIOS.

The problem is that in my model's BIOS, these options are not present or accessible. I have checked all available sections but cannot find any settings related to SATA, AHCI, or RAID.

For reference, I'm currently running BIOS version F.22. If needed, I can provide photos of all four BIOS screens (Main, Security, System Configuration, and Exit) to demonstrate the absence of SATA configuration options.

3. FAILED BIOS UPDATE ATTEMPT:

I also tried to update the BIOS, but I was unable to create the USB update drive because:

· HP's BIOS update utility does not work without an installed operating system

· I tried on two different computers with Windows 10 without success

· Without access to an operating system, I cannot perform the standard BIOS update

4. MY CURRENT SITUATION:

· Model: HP Envy 15-bq101nl (2ZJ78EA#ABZ) with AMD Ryzen 5

· Drive: Installed 2.5" SATA SSD (working, tested on other PCs)

· Problem: During Windows installation I receive: "No drives were found. Click 'Load driver' to provide a mass storage driver"

5. WHAT I'VE ALREADY TRIED:

✓ Checked all available BIOS options

✓ Downloaded drivers from HP website (but they're only .exe installers)

✓ Tried HP Cloud Recovery Tool (doesn't find Product ID after drive change)

✓ Tried various AMD drivers from the internet (none recognized)

✓ Attempted BIOS update (impossible without a functional OS)

MY SPECIFIC QUESTIONS:

1. For AMD-based HP Envy systems, where can I find the F6/preinstallation SATA drivers?

   · I need .inf files for installation, not .exe installers

2. How can I update the BIOS without an operating system?

   · Is there an alternative method?

3. How do I resolve this if the BIOS doesn't show configurable SATA options?

4. Is there an alternative method for HP Cloud Recovery Tool when it doesn't recognize the Product ID?

I can provide photos of my BIOS screens (F.22 version) if that would help diagnose the issue.

I would appreciate it if you could provide specific solutions for AMD-based HP Envy systems, as the standard Intel solutions do not apply.

Thank you for your further assistance.

Best regards,
