I just replaced the touch screen monitor on my HP ENVY 17T-CG100 laptop.  Now the laptop will not start - or it's starting but the display is blank and black.  I double-checked all the connections and all is good.  What did I miss - or do I have a defective (new) monitor?  Thanks in advance for your ideas and suggestions.

Hi @sbcma,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you are facing an issue with your HP Envy 17 after replacing the monitor. Here are some steps to help you troubleshoot and identify the problem:

  • Check Connections Again: Even though you mentioned double-checking, it’s worth doing one more thorough check. Ensure all cables and connectors, especially the ones connecting the monitor to the motherboard, are securely attached and properly seated. Look for any loose or disconnected wires.
  • Inspect for Damage: Examine the new monitor and the connecting cables for any signs of physical damage. Sometimes, the issue can be as simple as a damaged cable or a loose connector.
  • Test with External Display: Connect your laptop to an external monitor or TV using an HDMI or VGA cable. If the external display shows the laptop's output, the problem likely lies with the new monitor or its connections.
  • Reset the Laptop: Perform a hard reset. Power down the laptop completely, disconnect the power adapter, and remove the battery if possible. Hold down the power button for 15-30 seconds to discharge any residual power, then reconnect everything and try to power on the laptop.
  • Check BIOS/UEFI Settings: Sometimes, replacing hardware components can cause changes in BIOS/UEFI settings. Access the BIOS/UEFI setup (usually by pressing a key like F2, F10, Esc, or Del during startup) and check if there are any settings related to display or graphics that need adjustment.
  • Reinstall Drivers: If the external display works, try updating or reinstalling the graphics drivers. Go to the Device Manager, find your display adapters, and check for any driver updates.
  • Examine the New Monitor: If possible, test the new monitor in another laptop or device to ensure it’s functioning correctly. Alternatively, if you have an old or spare screen available, try replacing the new monitor with the old one to see if the laptop starts up properly.
  • Check for BIOS Beep Codes: If the laptop is beeping during startup, it could indicate a hardware issue. Refer to your laptop’s manual or HP's support site to decode the beep pattern.
  • Perform a Hard Drive Check: In rare cases, an improperly connected or malfunctioning monitor might cause issues with booting. Make sure the hard drive is properly connected and functioning.

I hope this helps.
