Envy 17M Lapton
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My keyboard problem began with the right-click menu popping up while typing and sometimes the cursor would jump around. I downloaded and ran the HP PC Diagnostics Tool for the keyboard test. It appears the Control key on both sides of the keyboard is not working properly. Right now, the problem seems to have disappeared but I think it will return. I've been struggling with this for over a week.

My question - is it possible for me to purchase a replacement keyboard and swap it out myself? Should I be convinced this is a hardware problem or could it be a driver or conflict with something else?

Any and all help is appreciated - this laptop isn't even 2 years old but of course the warranty is expired.

Thanks!!

We need the full model number of the laptop and the language and color of the keyboard. In order to make laptops as thin as possible in most cases current laptops have the keyboard embedded in the top cover so the part is expensive and the replacement difficult to do. However, the devil is in the details and we can't say for sure until you provide the full model number.

The model is silver, HP Envy 17m-ae011dx. The keyboard is backlit. I've attached a pic hoping it helps.

Can anyone provide insight into whether this keyboard is easy(ish) to replace? I'm now wondering if it isn't something other than the keyboard. The problem gets worse on some websites and almost seems it is related to how much pressure the heels of my hands cause resting on the keyboard.

Here's the Service Manual. See p. 58:

As expected, HP provides only the whole top cover/keyboard combo as a replacement part. And you have to pretty much disassemble the whole laptop to get to it and replace it. You would rebuild the laptop onto the new top cover.

The part is $149 on HP Parts Store:
