My laptop lost track of the 😧 drive partition(?) today. When it has done that many times in the past, I grumble to myself but then do a reboot & it has always come back but not anymore after several reboots. I downloaded the latest version of the diagnostic software. I ran the Extensive memory test which told me a known firmware issue was detected - HPS4NFXV & HPS8 firmware needs to be downloaded. I am currently running Win11 Home, 24H2, build 26100.6584. When I try to use the hp website & let it detect my laptop, it will not correctly present Win11 as a selectable OS so I can't tell if firmware HPS8 really exists or not. Additionally, when I do F2 upon boot, I get a message that SMART hard disk check has detected an imminent failure Hard Disk 1 (301) but when I let the boot continue, things seem normal except for no 😧 drive listed. Can someone tell me if there is a firmware HPS8 that I can download somehow to try? Any other things to try? Thanks!

Hi @BobM_Missouri,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.
Thanks for explaining the situation in detail. This is a serious issue, and your screenshots and description help a lot.
What the Errors Mean
- SMART Hard Disk Check (301) → Your primary drive is reporting imminent failure. This is a hardware-level warning, not just a software glitch.
- Missing 😧 Partition → The disk may have corrupted sectors or be failing physically.
- HP Diagnostics Firmware Alert (HPS4NFXV & HPS8) → HP’s diagnostic tool detected a known firmware vulnerability that needs patching. These firmware updates usually relate to the storage controller or SSD firmware.
Recommended Steps
1. Backup Immediately
- If the system still boots, copy all critical files to an external drive or cloud storage.
- Do this before running any more tests; the disk could fail completely.
2. Run HP UEFI Diagnostics
- Restart → Press Esc repeatedly → F2.
- Run Storage Test and confirm failure codes.
- Note any 24-digit failure ID; you’ll need this for HP support.
3. Download Firmware Updates
- Go to HP ENVY Laptop - 17t-cg000 CTO | HP® Support.
- Enter your model: HP Envy Laptop 17t-cg.
- Under Firmware, look for HPS4NFXV or HPS8 updates.
- If not visible, use HP Support Assistant or contact HP support for direct links.
4. Prepare for Drive Replacement
- The SMART 301 error means the drive is failing physically.
- Firmware updates may not fix this; they only address vulnerabilities, not mechanical failure.
- If under warranty, HP will replace the drive.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have an amazing day!
