The right hinge made a cracking noise about 10 months ago, but I couldn't see any problem so ignored it, foolishly. My laptop spends most of it's life on my desk connected to an external screen. Rarely is the lid shut or the hinge operated. It still works, and I realise it's now out of extended warranty (expired September 2022), and little bits of black plastic have now fallen out of the corner. I am now very cautious when opening/closing the display lid down. Sadly, I have found more than a dozen incidents of such hinge failures across the internet, all of which appear to have been denied by HP as a design fault and the users left to live with it, or pay (heavily) for fixes, even when well within warranty. The central element of the hinges is a cylindrical piece of plastic, which fractures and breaks up. The part No for my model, taken from HP's documentation is L54121-001, but I cant see a way to source them from HP, though several 2nd hand options exist elsewhere (e.g. EBay). I am very disappointed that a laptop costing £1000 + should develop such a fault. I have no doubt that if I'd used it "portable" more regularly, this fault would have shown up within months of ownership, not towards the end of its warranty. Having used HP laptops and PC's for many years, I doubt I'll be buying an HP laptop again. Has anyone had any success resolving this fault or obtaining new (not second-hand) hinges?
