HP Envy x360 15.6 inch 2-in-1 Laptop PC 15-fe0000 (77X84AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

Hello,

i just bought a HP X360 Envy, and i cant say that im impressed with the cooling system. Even with mild workloads the fan ramps at CPU Temps of just over 40° which is a joke for a CPU that is allowed to reach a hundred degrees C.

Even with Prime 95 i didnt manage to reach Temperatures of more then 83°C. Which is great if this notebook wouldnt be the loudest one i ever owned.

The fan is constantly spinning even with just office work. Thats quite distracting when sitting in a library or in the evening alone in a room.

Devices i used: Dell, Apple, Lenovo: R61 T61, T500, T440, T450, T450s, T470, T480, T14G1 to G4, Dell Latitude E6410, E6540, E7470, E7490, Macbook Pro 13 2016. Every single one of these devices was dead silent with office workloads. Even Fujitsu, which mostla builds Notebooks with garbadge cooling system is more silent under less demanding workloads.

Its fine if the device is noisy under full load whewn the CPU heats up noticably. 45°C is not noticably, thats low temp and doenst require a spinning fan. Let it ramp up when the cpu hits 70°C or something like that. When its actually doing something.

How can i modify the fancurve to something more sensible like other manufacturers. The HP Command Center is quite useless because it not only affects the fancurve, but also the maximum allowed Energy... All i want is some peace and quiet.

Hi @Schwarzie2k,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP Envy laptop is making excessive noise, there could be several reasons behind it. Here are some common causes and solutions.

  • Fan Noise: Laptops often have fans to cool down the internal components. If the fan is running at high speed due to overheating or excessive processing load, it can create noise. Ensure that your laptop is placed on a hard and flat surface to allow proper airflow. Additionally, you can clean the fan and vents to remove dust and debris, which can hinder proper cooling.
  • Background Processes: If your laptop is running numerous background processes or applications, it can cause the processor to work harder, resulting in more heat and louder fan noise. Close unnecessary programs or consider upgrading your laptop's RAM for smoother multitasking.
  • Outdated Drivers: Outdated or incompatible drivers can cause various hardware components to function improperly, leading to noise issues. Make sure you have the latest drivers for your laptop from the official HP website.
  • Hard Drive Noise: If your laptop has a traditional hard drive, it might make noise due to mechanical movement. Consider upgrading to a Solid State Drive (SSD), which is quieter and faster.
  • Dying Hard Drive: If the noise sounds like clicking or grinding, it could be an indication that your hard drive is failing. Backup your important data immediately and consider replacing the hard drive.
  • Optical Drive: If your laptop has an optical drive (CD/DVD drive), it might produce noise when reading or writing discs. You can avoid this noise by not using the optical drive when not necessary.
  • External Factors: Sometimes, noise from the surroundings can be mistaken for laptop noise. Ensure that the noise is indeed coming from the laptop and not from nearby sources.
  • Power Settings: Adjust your laptop's power settings to ensure that it's not operating at higher performance levels when it's not needed. This can help reduce fan noise.
  • Malware or Background Processes: Malware or unwanted background processes can cause your laptop to work harder, resulting in increased fan noise. Run a thorough malware scan using reliable security software.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Great... i wrote a lenthy reply as feedback and thought it would be put in here as a reply. Apparently i was wrong.

TL:DR since i dont want this utterly outdated information to stand here as "helpful": it isnt. This reply is aproximately outated by 5+ years.

Nowadays Notebooks with exandable Ram are a rarity and DVD drives are as dead as it gets.

In regards to the rest: my device is one week old and has up to date drivers and Bios. The problem isnt excessive load on the device (i use it for office and light multimedia in the evening) but the fancurve.

And im more and more convinced that the HP staff im confronted with in the support doesnt understand what a fan curve actually is and why this one is obviously bad.

The maximum temperature i managed to reach in the power setting in HP command center with prime 95 was 83° at a TDP of 30W. So the cooling system is obviously potent! So use it, the cpu is allowed to reach 100° so use that instead of trying to keep it at a nonsensical 45° with excessive noise!

Apple learned that lessons and lets its devices run hot until cooling is actually needed! In return theyare dead silent  under low load. This device here isnt. Because of a bad fancurve that tries to keep the temperatures excessively and unnecessarty low.
