HP ENVY Laptop - 15-ep0008na
Microsoft Windows 11

This problem has attracted numerous posts but no solution.  My first HP Envy became too hot to touch when sleeping after two years, and shut down.  I t still worked once it had cooled down, but I feared it was damaged.  John Lewis collected it and said that they could not repair it, so gave me a refund.  I bought a new one and I have found by testing that the same thing would probably happen if I let it sleep more than a few minutes.  My old Envy switched its fan on from time to time while sleeping, but seems to have stopped doing that.  My new one does not switch its fan on when sleeping either, no matter how hot, but fans at high speed when woken up if it has heated up during sleep.  This suggests to me that a bug has been introduced in some update to the system software that now prevents the fan operating during sleep.  My workaround is to never let the laptop sleep.  This is a waste of my time (if I hibernate it) or energy (if I leave it running).  CAN HP PLEASE ADDRESS THIS ISSUE, WHICH MUST AFFECT ALL OWNERS OF THE HP ENVY.  I would prefer not to have to contact Mark Brasher, UK Managing Director of HP.

Hi @MrData56,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP Envy laptop is overheating when it is in sleep mode, there may be a few potential causes for this issue. Here are some troubleshooting steps you can try to address the problem.

  • Update your laptop's BIOS: Make sure you have the latest version of the laptop's BIOS installed. BIOS updates often include bug fixes and performance improvements that can help resolve overheating issues.
  • Check power settings: Ensure that the power settings on your laptop are configured properly. Open the Power Options in the Control Panel or Settings and verify that the settings are optimized for balanced or power-saving mode. Adjusting the settings to limit CPU performance while in sleep mode can help reduce overheating.
  • Clean the air vents and fans: Over time, dust and debris can accumulate in the laptop's air vents and fans, restricting airflow and causing overheating. Use compressed air or a soft brush to gently clean the vents and fans to improve cooling efficiency.
  • Elevate the laptop: Placing the laptop on a flat, hard surface can enhance airflow and dissipate heat more effectively. Consider using a cooling pad with built-in fans or using a laptop stand to elevate the laptop for better ventilation.
  • Disable wake timers: Some wake timers can cause the laptop to wake up from sleep mode unnecessarily, leading to increased heat generation. Disable wake timers by going to Power Options > Change plan settings > Change advanced power settings > Sleep > Allow wake timers and set it to "Disable."
  • Update device drivers: Outdated or incompatible device drivers can sometimes lead to overheating problems. Visit the HP support website and ensure that you have the latest drivers installed for your laptop's components, especially the graphics card and chipset drivers.
  • Scan for malware: Malicious software running in the background can cause increased system activity and heat generation. Run a thorough scan using a reliable antivirus program to detect and remove any malware on your laptop.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

I tried all suggestions to no avail.  My detailed notes are below.

  1. Update your laptop's BIOS: Make sure you have the latest version of the laptop's BIOS installed. BIOS updates often include bug fixes and performance improvements that can help resolve overheating issues. The BIOS version/date is AMI F12 28/06/2022.  According to the HP support website https://support.hp.com/gb-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-envy-15.6-inch-laptop-pc-15-ep1000/2100648287/mo... “you don’t need any new drivers at this time”.  However, it does offer HP Notebook System BIOS Update (Intel Processors) F14 Rev.A  May 17, 2023.  The details of this upgrade when you click on it and “Fixes” just state “Provides improved security”  It does not state that it fixes the overheating during sleep problem.  Subsequently the HP Support Assistant reported that the BIOS needed updating, and I agreed to let it do so.  The BIOS version on my laptop is now AMI F.14 8/5/2023.  Left to sleep for 15 minutes, there was a little fan activity, but it still overheated and Core Temp hibernated it when sleep was terminated.
  2. Check power settings: Ensure that the power settings on your laptop are configured properly. Open the Power Options in the Control Panel or Settings and verify that the settings are optimized for balanced or power-saving mode. Balanced mode was already selected.
  3. Adjusting the settings to limit CPU performance while in sleep mode can help reduce overheating. I selected Power Options > Change plan settings > Change advanced power settings, and at branch "Processor power management" set the Maximum processor state Settings I reduced it from 100% to 75%, for both plugged in and battery.  Laptop still felt hotter than while running, after 19 minutes of sleep, and fan blew moderately hard when sleep mode was ended.  Changed back to 100%
  4. Clean the air vents and fans: Over time, dust and debris can accumulate in the laptop's air vents and fans, restricting airflow and causing overheating. Use compressed air or a soft brush to gently clean the vents and fans to improve cooling efficiency. Laptop was received new on 3.5.2023.  This is not applicable therefore.
  5. Elevate the laptop: Placing the laptop on a flat, hard surface can enhance airflow and dissipate heat more effectively. Consider using a cooling pad with built-in fans or using a laptop stand to elevate the laptop for better ventilation. I elevated the rear of the laptop on a strip of wood one inch thick, taking care not to block the air vents.  It did not help.
  6. Disable wake timers: Some wake timers can cause the laptop to wake up from sleep mode unnecessarily, leading to increased heat generation. Disable wake timers by going to Power Options > Change plan settings > Change advanced power settings > Sleep > Allow wake timers and set it to "Disable." These were already set to “Disable”
  7. Update device drivers: Outdated or incompatible device drivers can sometimes lead to overheating problems. Visit the HP support website and ensure that you have the latest drivers installed for your laptop's components, especially the graphics card and chipset drivers. All HP Support Assistant could suggest was the following:
  8. Scan for malware: Malicious software running in the background can cause increased system activity and heat generation. Run a thorough scan using a reliable antivirus program to detect and remove any malware on your laptop.   My laptop is protected by F-Secure SAFE, but I ran a scan anyway and it was pronounced clean.
