HP ENVY 17.3 inch Laptop PC 17-cr0000 IDS Base Model
Microsoft Windows 11

Hello. This morning, HP envy laptop started making really odd snappy noises. I assumed it was the fan and I attempted to change the power settings but this did not work. The fans at the bottom look clean so I am not sure what is causing this issue.

Below is a video of the noise. Thank you for any assistance.

Hi @mchin413,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP Envy laptop is making odd snappy noises that you suspect might be related to the fan, here are a few steps you can take to troubleshoot the issue.

  • Clean the fan: Dust and debris can accumulate on the fan blades, causing it to make unusual noises. Turn off your laptop, unplug it from the power source, and remove the battery (if it's removable). Use compressed air or a soft brush to carefully clean the fan vents and remove any dust or debris. Make sure not to damage the fan blades while cleaning.
  • Update your BIOS and drivers: Outdated system software, including the BIOS and drivers, can sometimes cause issues with fan performance. Visit the official HP support website and download the latest BIOS and driver updates for your specific laptop model. Install them according to the provided instructions.
  • Check for software issues: Some software applications can cause high CPU usage, which in turn may result in the fan working harder and producing more noise. Open the Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) and check the CPU usage. If you notice any unusually high usage by specific programs, consider closing or uninstalling them to see if it reduces the fan noise.
  • Reset power settings: Since changing power settings didn't work for you initially, you can try resetting the power plan to its default settings. Open the Control Panel, navigate to Power Options, and select the "Restore default settings for this plan" option.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
