My computer stopped charging. I've tried everything in this article except for removing the battery: https://www.hp.com/us-en/shop/tech-takes/how-to-fix-laptop-that-wont-charge. The charger works fine to charge other things, like my phone, and the connection with the port on the computer feels tight. It was working fine this morning, and the battery report showed that it still has over 80% of its initial capacity. It doesn't say "plugged in but not charging" or anything like that--just no indication that the computer is detecting the presence of the charger at all. I tried updating the drivers and uninstalling the Microsoft ACPI Compliant Control Method Battery and rebooting. Definitely not overheating. Nothing has worked.

Hi @runhaags

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I understand how frustrating it feels when your HP Envy suddenly stops charging, especially after you’ve already tried so many of the right steps like updating drivers and checking the ACPI battery control.

Since the charger works fine with other devices and the port feels solid, the issue is more about the laptop not detecting the power input rather than the adapter itself.

Steps to try next

1. Perform a hardware reset

  • Shut down the laptop completely.
  • Disconnect the charger and any peripherals.
  • Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds to discharge residual power.
  • Reconnect the charger and try powering on again.

2. Test with another HP‑certified adapter

  • If possible, borrow or test with another HP adapter of the same wattage.
  • This helps confirm whether the detection issue is with the adapter or the laptop’s charging circuit.

3. Inspect the charging port and cable

  • Use a flashlight to check the port for dust or debris.
  • Gently clean with compressed air if needed.
  • Ensure the cable is not bent or frayed near the connector.

4. Update BIOS and chipset drivers

  • Visit the official HP support page for your model:
HP Envy Laptop Drivers and Software
  • Enter your exact model number.
  • Download and install the latest BIOS and chipset drivers.
  • Restart the laptop after installation.

5. Run HP PC Hardware Diagnostics

  • Restart the laptop and press F2 repeatedly to open HP PC Hardware Diagnostics.
  • Run the Component Test > Power to check battery and adapter recognition.
  • This will confirm whether the system is detecting the charger at a hardware level.

6. Check Windows power settings

  • Go to Settings > System > Power & battery.
  • Ensure the power mode is set to Balanced or Best Power Efficiency.
  • Sometimes incorrect profiles can interfere with charging behavior.

Summary

The most effective immediate actions are to perform a hardware reset, update BIOS/chipset drivers, and run the Power test in HP PC Hardware Diagnostics. These steps will confirm whether the laptop is able to detect the charger and help isolate whether the issue is hardware or software related.

I had the same problem and called HP Support and they suggested I unplug everything from the ports and press the power key and F6 at the same time for 30 seconds and then plug in my computer, and that worked for me! He said it resets the USB-C ports to be able to receive power again, and that sometimes Windows updates can create this problem. I couldn't find this solution anywhere online so I'm posting it here in the hopes that it helps someone else.
