Hi @SigK,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP Envy laptop is not recognizing a USB drive, there could be several reasons for this issue. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the problem.

Check the USB Drive:

  • First, make sure the USB drive is working properly by trying it on another computer. If it's not recognized on other computers either, the drive itself may be faulty.

Try Different USB Ports:

  • Plug the USB drive into different USB ports on your HP Envy laptop. Sometimes, a specific USB port may be malfunctioning.

Restart Your Laptop:

  • Sometimes, a simple restart can resolve USB recognition issues. Restart your HP Envy and try plugging in the USB drive again.

Update USB Drivers:

  • Outdated or corrupted USB drivers can cause recognition problems. Make sure your HP Envy's USB drivers are up-to-date. You can do this by visiting the HP support website and downloading the latest drivers for your laptop.

Check Device Manager:

  • Open Device Manager (you can search for it in the Start menu), expand the "Universal Serial Bus controllers" section, and check if there are any devices with a yellow triangle or exclamation mark icon. If you see any, right-click on them and select "Update driver."

Disable USB Selective Suspend:

  • USB Selective Suspend is a power-saving feature that can sometimes cause USB devices not to be recognized. To disable it:
    • Go to Control Panel > Power Options.
    • Click on "Change plan settings" for your current power plan.
    • Click on "Change advanced power settings."
    • Expand "USB settings" and "USB selective suspend setting," then set it to "Disabled."

Check for System Updates:

  • Ensure that your HP Envy laptop has the latest Windows or operating system updates installed. Sometimes, an OS update can resolve hardware recognition issues.

Try a Different USB Drive:

  • If possible, try using a different USB drive on your HP Envy to see if it's an issue with the specific drive or a broader problem with USB recognition.

Scan for Malware or Viruses:

  • Malware or viruses on your computer can sometimes interfere with USB recognition. Run a full system scan using your antivirus software to rule out this possibility.

BIOS/UEFI Settings:

  • In some cases, BIOS or UEFI settings can affect USB functionality. Make sure USB support is enabled in your BIOS/UEFI settings.

USB Hub or Docking Station:

  • If you are using a USB hub or docking station, try connecting the USB drive directly to your laptop's USB port to eliminate any potential issues with the hub or docking station.

Hardware Issue:

  • If none of the above steps work, there may be a hardware problem with your laptop's USB ports.

By following these steps, you can identify and hopefully resolve the issue of your HP Envy not recognizing a USB drive.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
