My HP notebook ENVY x360 has a crazy issue with the fan. It sounds like it's stuck on something or running way too fast and it makes a wild sound. It'll calm down after a while and then run normally but it keeps happening. I've opened up the back and cleaned the dust out a couple of times but it keeps doing it. I also ran all the bios and diagnostics tests and everything passed. Do I just need a new fan?

Hi @BradenSmith,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

We understand you're experiencing an abnormal fan noise issue with your HP ENVY x360 notebook, despite having already cleaned the fan and passed all diagnostics. Sorry to hear about the trouble you are facing.

1. Check BIOS Fan Behavior Settings

Some models allow custom fan behavior:

  • Reboot → Press Esc > then F10 for BIOS Setup
  • Look for a tab like “Thermal” or “Advanced” > “Thermal Configuration”
  • If “Fan Always On” is enabled, try disabling it temporarily to observe behavior
  • Save and exit

Note: Disabling this won’t stop necessary cooling — it just prevents the fan from spinning unnecessarily at low temps.

2. Run HP Hardware Diagnostics Again (Fan Specific)

Just to confirm:

  • Power off the system
  • Press Esc repeatedly, then F2 for HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI
  • Choose “Component Tests > Fan”
  • If the fan passes, but noise persists, it further supports mechanical degradation, not control failure.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
